Federal Direct PLUS (Parent) Loan

Federal Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) are processed through the federal government.

May 1 is the first day you can begin applying for the upcoming school year.

Parents of eligible dependent students may borrow up to the yearly cost of attendance -- as determined by JCCC -- for each child. The amount borrowed may not exceed the cost of education minus any other financial aid the student is eligible for. PLUS loans are unsubsidized, so the parent borrower is responsible for interest during the life of the loan.

Direct PLUS Loan Application Procedures

First, your student must complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and complete the JCCC Financial Aid process.

Next, you will go to studentloans.gov to complete the Direct PLUS Loan request.

  1. Parent logs in using their FSA ID. If the parent has forgotten their FSA ID, request a duplicate one or apply for a new FSA ID.
  2. On the left side of the screen, under the heading PLUS Loan Process, select Apply for a PLUS Loan.
  3. Then select Complete PLUS Request for Parents.
  4. Complete the remaining four steps to confirm the process has been completed.

A credit check is required as part of the application process. If your application is denied, the student may be eligible for additional unsubsidized loan funds. To receive these funds, the student will need to complete an additional federal aid request. If your application is accepted, complete the promissory note and parent certification form, as outlined below.

E‐signature/Master Promissory Notes

The parent must complete and electronically sign a promissory note for your Direct PLUS Loan. This is your agreement with the U.S. Department of Education that you will repay your loan. When completing your promissory note, you will need to have the contact information for two references. The references must reside at different addresses from the borrower.

  1. Go to studentloans.gov.
  2. Parent logs in using their FSA ID. If the parent has forgotten their FSA ID, request a duplicate one or apply for a new FSA ID.
  3. On the left side of the screen, under the heading Master Promissory Note, select Complete MPN.
  4. Then select Complete PLUS MPN for Parents.
  5. Complete the remaining four steps to confirm the MPN has been signed and submitted.
