Partnering with parents for a seamless transition

Family of international student celebrating graduation

Welcome to the JCCC family! As your loved one embarks on their educational journey, we understand that this transition can be overwhelming and intimidating for both you and your student. Rest assured, International and Immigrant Student Services (IISS) is here to support you every step of the way.

At JCCC, we prioritize the success and well-being of our students, and we recognize that a strong partnership with parents and their student is crucial. That is why we have developed this resource to help you navigate this exciting chapter.

Our team of IISS Coordinators is ready to provide guidance and answer any questions you may have. From understanding JCCC’s enrollment process to exploring academic and career paths, our team is committed to ensuring your loved one's smooth transition into college life.

It’s important that you and your loved one are aware of these key resources that will make the academic transition easier:

1. Orientation:

We highly encourage every student to attend an orientation program. This 90-minute session provides valuable information about campus resources, academic expectations, and gives your student the opportunity to connect with fellow students. Participation will give your loved one a good start in acclimating to college life.

2. Academic Support:

JCCC offers a wide range of academic support services to help your student thrive. From tutoring and study groups to academic advising, our dedicated staff is here to ensure student success in the classroom.

3. Campus Resources:

Our campus boasts a multitude of resources designed to enhance the student experience. From the library and computer labs to the fitness center and student organizations, we encourage your student to explore all that JCCC has to offer.

4. Health and Wellness:

We understand the importance of your loved one maintaining their well-being. JCCC offers comprehensive health and wellness services, including counseling, wellness programs, and a fitness center which serves to ensure your student has the support needed to thrive both academically and personally.

5. Safety:

At JCCC, we have established a robust Police Department and Emergency Management system. Safety is not just a buzzword but a continuous commitment. We regularly conduct safety drills, training sessions, and workshops to educate and prepare our community members about potential hazards and emergency procedures. We also encourage everyone to familiarize themselves with the emergency communication channels available on campus, such as the emergency alert system and the official JCCC website, where timely updates and information about safety measures are regularly shared.

6. Educational Privacy/FERPA:

As a United States academic institution, JCCC is required to follow a law called Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, commonly called FERPA. Under FERPA, educational records are considered private in the U.S. This means that even if you sponsor or financially support your loved one's education, you will not have access to their educational records without their explicit permission.

To gain access to the educational records of your student, it is necessary for the student to have a Release of Information form on file with us. This form authorizes the disclosure of specific educational records to designated individuals.

If you have questions or need more clarification about how your student may grant you authorization to access their records, please visit the FERPA page or contact the Student Records department. They will guide you through the process of obtaining access to the educational records, should your loved one choose to grant you permission.

7. Paying for Your Student:

The Bursar’s Office offers billing and payment support by phone, email, and in-person. You can find the answers to many frequently asked questions on our website. Here are a few important things you should know:

  • Billing statements are published monthly for students who have an unpaid balance. Statements do not reflect activity (payments, adds/drops, financial aid, etc.) that happens after the statement date. MyFinances in the MyJCCC student portal will always reflect the most up-to-date balance.
  • Students may authorize others to view and/or pay their tuition by adding an Authorized User.
  • Students who enroll in classes on or before the payment deadline must make payment arrangements by the payment deadline or risk being dropped for nonpayment.
  • JCCC accepts payment in person, online, and by mail.
  • International payments can be made through Flywire, which is JCCC’s partner for easy, secure tuition payments using the currency of your home country.
  • JCCC offers payment plans to assist students in paying their tuition and fees. Plans are offered for Fall, Spring and Summer credit terms.
