Here's what you can expect from the application process.

Selection into the Program

Initial selection will be based upon total ranking criteria of each applicant as follows:

  • The GPA based only on coursework (or GED score) required for the program that has been completed by the application deadline. The Human Growth and Development course if still in progress a screen shot of the current grade must be added to application within 15 days of deadline.
  • Johnson County and Kansas residents will be given priority consideration. County residency must be established six (6) months prior to the application deadline to qualify for these additional points.
    • Johnson County residents = 2 additional points - Beginning July 1, 2023 residency will no longer be considered
    • Kansas residents = 1 additional point - Beginning July 1, 2023 residency will no longer be considered
      • Applicants can only qualify for points from one of these residencies.
    • Previous degrees earned will also qualify for additional points.
      • Associate Degree = 1 additional point
      • Bachelor's degree or higher = 2 additional points
    • Current Kansas CNA certificate is active through the first day of class, even if you are currently employed as a CNA. Note: Program director waiver may be granted for active Kansas CMA or HHA.
      • CNA/CMA/HHA will be given 1 additional point with verified employment as a CNA/CMA/HHA

After all rankings are completed, applicants will be notified as to whether or not they have been accepted to interview for the program. The top 70 full time candidates and 60 part time candidates will be offered the opportunity to interview. Effective July 1, 2023 The top 60 full time candidates and 50 part time candidates will be offered the opportunity to interview.

Ranking Information

  • The Practical Nursing coursework GPA and additional point rankings (60%) and Interview score (40%).
  • The top 32 fall full time, 24 spring full time, and 24 part time students will be invited into the JCCC Practical Nursing Program based on current clinical standards and available faculty.
  • A waiting list will be established should any of the candidates decline their position.
  • Applicants are notified in late-April as to whether or not they have been selected to for the program(s).
  • An emailed letter will advise you if you have not been selected and will include your wait-list ranking.
  • If you are not offered a position, please make an appointment with a JCCC Counselor to assess your options.
  • Final selection will be based on the following ranking criteria for each applicant:
    • The academic assessment (GPA) and additional point rankings contributes 60% of the final ranking.
    • Interview score is 40% of the final ranking.
    • After rankings are completed (late-April), applicants will be notified by email if they have been accepted into the program.
    • Application materials received after deadlines will not be considered. Please see deadline dates under Admission Requirements.
    • The PN program does not consider or accept reference letters.
