Completing the following application steps will put you on the path to becoming a Respiratory Therapist.

We recommend meeting with a JCCC healthcare academic counselor as your first step in the application process. Because this is a selective admission program, please pay particular attention to the admission criteria and transcript requirements.

The application is available online in early December with a submission deadline of March 15 each year. If you applied previously but were not selected, or if you were selected but did not complete all prerequisites by the start date, you must reapply.

All questions concerning the admission process and application should be directed to Teresa Leland in the Selective Admissions Office, 913-469-3438.

Prospective RC students who have not attended JCCC before (or if it has been more than two years since you last attended) must complete a JCCC application for admission. The application is the first step in the enrollment process; select Non-Degree Seeking or Liberal Arts for your major and the appropriate term.

After you receive your JCCC ID number, follow the steps under Current JCCC Students. It may take five business days for your application to be processed; please email the Admissions office if you want to apply to the program within 10 days of the posted deadline.

  1. Complete the Respiratory Care application.
  2. Completion of high school or GED is required for admission to the RC Program.  Check the “High School/GED” box on the application to indicate that you have completed high school or GED.  It is not required to submit the diploma/GED for the application, but the program may request verification at a later date.
  3. Complete the Respiratory Care Questionnaire before the March 15 deadline.
  4. Complete the online Disclosure and Consent for Background Check form on the RC application.
  5. Arrange for official transcripts from all previous colleges to be sent directly to JCCC. It is not necessary to request JCCC transcripts or transcripts already on file at JCCC. Your college transcripts must demonstrate a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher to be eligible for admission to the program. Students with international college transcripts need to allow extra time for their foreign transcripts to be evaluated. Please contact a coordinator or the program director of the International and Immigrant Student Services office, COM 306, 913-469-7680, for more information. See our Transcripts page for instructions on submitting official transcripts from other schools. All documents must be submitted prior to the application deadline (March 15) for students to be considered eligible for application to the program.
  6. We ask prospective students to meet with a JCCC healthcare counselor to review their transcripts. In cases where transcripts are evaluated but a prerequisite course equivalent is not granted during the transfer process, the Counselor will re-evaluate then submit the Course Substitution Request to that particular department for approval. Without the official Course Substitution, we may assume you did not successfully complete that prerequisite.
  7. For extra points in ranking, upload your CNA, EMT, Pharmacy Technician, or other approved healthcare certification to your application or email to tleland@jccc.edu. The program admission criteria requirements will be used to determine your eligibility, final ranking, and selection. (See details on the Respiratory Care admissions criteria page.)
  8. Contact the Respiratory Care program office early and maintain contact through the application process.
  9. It is important to monitor your Personal Admission Plan, your MyJCCC account and your JCCC email for information on your application status. Your Personal Admission Plan checklist will be updated periodically as the Admissions office processes application materials. Contact Teresa Leland, tleland@jccc.edu, if you have questions on the application process.
