Sustainability and Wellness in Interior Design
Valuing the importance of sustainability and client well-being is a big focus in our design practices. We spotlight sustainability in every class and partner with our on-campus Center for Sustainability to promote an understanding of making sound decisions in doing our part to protect the environment and client welfare.
ADA and Universal Design

Learn and apply the 17 elements and principles of design, gain an understanding of color theory and explore how the design process is developed. Solve design problems through manual and digital media with materials and finishes, and present hands-on design projects professionally for in-class presentations.
* Note: DRAF 164 is recommended to be taken in conjunction with this class
ITMD 129 - Design Communication
Explore manual and digital methods of detailed, professional design presentation through 3D drawing and rendering in a studio environment. Understand the importance of function first combined with details of style, material texturing, light sources and shading to realistically showcase and professionally present design solutions.
ITMD 132 - Materials and Resources
Explore a wide variety of design materials, finishes and local resources used in interiors. Learn the pros and cons of each, and gain an understanding of functional applications using appropriate materials. Understand the critical importance of being able to educate clients for design solutions.
* Note: F2F classes tour multiple design showrooms throughout the KC metro.
ITMD 202 -Interior Design II
Focused on the technical aspects of the design process to define and apply the procedures from phase 1: Programming through phase 3: Design Development to effectively solve a design problem. The design solutions incorporate anthropometrics, proxemics and universal design elements. The course introduces varying psychological dynamics and how they will affect the built environment.
ITMD 222-Interior Design III
An advanced residential design studio course mastering comprehensive design techniques and procedures of the design process. Focus on professionalism in solving mock and real client design problems. Apply turnkey design solutions using digital mediums of contract documents and drawings, lighting, and FF+E and finish schedules for formal presentation.
ITMD 224 - Interior Design IV
This is an advanced course focusing on commercial design using an "evidence-based design" approach. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to describe and apply general and specific programming tasks, understand research methods used in design, analyze style and historic value, define contextual elements related to the built environment, understand the implementation of sustainability throughout the approach, apply human factors and philosophies to design solution, and understand the different approaches to various design categories.
ITMD 235 - Kitchen and Bath Design
This is an advanced course in kitchen and bath design, planning and management. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to produce drawings using appropriate graphic and presentation standards, develop written and verbal design statement to substantiate projects, demonstrate product, material, style, type and construction method knowledge, communicate and recommended installation procedures, understand selection, specification and ordering of products as it relates to cost, energy, safety and design. Students will also analyze sustainability within a kitchen and bath project.
