Admission to the daytime full-time program requires approval from the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Technology (HVAC) Department. Night classes do not require any approvals or communication to enroll.
There are two tracks to complete the HVAC Certificate program:
Full-time day schedule (only starts in the fall)
This is the fastest way to complete this credential and get you on the path to becoming an HVAC Technician in two semesters. There are 54 spots available for this path.
This schedule runs Monday through Thursday during the day, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. There will be one course that will require you to attend two Fridays or two Saturdays depending on what cohort you fall in.
Part-time evening schedule (starts any semester)
Part-time evening courses do not require department approval. This path is designed for those who are currently working in the HVAC industry or those who want to make a career change while working full-time during the day.
This schedule runs a mix of Monday and Wednesday night classes and Tuesday and Thursday night classes from 6-9 p.m. It will take four semesters to complete. There will be one course that will require you attend two Saturday classes. There are 18 spots available for this path.
Step 1 - Apply and Declare Your Major
Apply to JCCC. You may also apply with the assistance of an academic counselor who works with our Industrial Technology programs. Any admission requirements by the College must be completed before you can be accepted into the HVAC program.
State whether you want the full-time day or part-time evening program when you apply. Remember, you can only start the full-time day program in the fall; you may start the part-time evening program in either fall or spring.
You must declare your major as 6230 HVAC Technology Certificate. If you intend to pursue the Associate of Applied Science degree, then you will also declare the 3020 HVAC AAS as your second major. The associate degree will take four semesters being a full-time student.
If you need to update your major, submit the Change of Major form.
Step 2 - Get Department Approval
April 1 is the day we begin accepting new prospective students via email sent from a JCCC student email for the upcoming Fall Semester. A student list is created in the order of emails received. All emails regarding daytime program approvals received before 12 a.m. on April 1 will not be considered.
You'll want to be ready to enroll when open enrollment begins in April (see academic calendars for specific dates).
Email the HVAC Technology Department with the subject line: HVAC Day Program Approval Request. Include your:
- Full name
- Telephone number
- JCCC ID number (assigned when you completed the online application)
- Stated intention to apply for the certificate program
Step 3 - Enroll
Someone from the HVAC Technology Department will contact you (in response to your email from Step 2) to discuss the program and enrollment process. This may take up to two weeks or as soon as all 54 spots are filled.
All courses require prior department approval before you'll be allowed to enroll. Once you receive confirmation from the department chair, you'll be able to enroll in the appropriate classes.
Due to extremely high demand, once you receive department approval, you must enroll in your courses within two (2) weeks. If you have not enrolled by the end of this 14-day window, your spot will be forfeited and offered to the next student in line.
Costs
Tuition
Standard tuition rates apply.
The payment deadline for the fall semester is mid-August (see academic calendars for specific dates). We highly recommend that you pay for your courses as soon as possible. If you drop off of the schedule due to non-payment, you could lose your spot to another candidate on the wait list.
Textbooks
Textbook costs range from $80-$200 per course. You can view and purchase required textbooks by visiting the Bookstore or buying them online. The Bookstore online ordering system provides comparative pricing. Please bring textbooks with you to the first day of class.
Equipment and Supplies
You will be required to purchase safety glasses and tools for the lab sections. Do not purchase any tools ahead of these courses. Your instructor will go over with you which tools you will need. Costs for these tools range from $400 to $600, and are spread over the length of the program.
Please email the HVAC Technology Department with any additional questions or call 913-469-8500, ext. 4672.
