The Phlebotomy Technician program is a nationally accredited certificate program through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). In this program, students learn all aspects of phlebotomy in a healthcare setting, including collection procedures, safety guidelines, patient rights, test requirements, and equipment basics.

Program overview

The Phlebotomy Technician program is a 152.5-hour, program devising of classroom learning and practical training, including 100 hours of clinical externship experience at Olathe Medical Center – University of Kansas Health System. During the externship, students will work on-on-one with Phlebotomy Technician staff to perform 100 successful unaided venipuncture procedures on live individuals.

Learning outcomes include:

  • The Phlebotomy Technician Program prepares students to work as Phlebotomy Technicians and to sit for the ASCP Board of Certification.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in accurately performing unaided venipuncture.
  • Demonstrate and explain familiarity of collection procedures.
  • Identify the supplies needed for collection.
  • Discuss patient confidentiality, professional ethics, infection control, and equipment maintenance.

Program requirements

  • Program application
    Complete the Phlebotomy Technician program application.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
    A valid certification or proof of enrollment in a future BLS course is required prior to enrollment in the ECG program. BLS certifications must be obtained prior to the externship.
  • Background check, drug screen, and Ishihara test
    Students are expected to pass a background check, drug screen, and Ishihara test.
    Please note that background checks containing a conviction are treated on a case-by-case basis and do not mean automatic denial to the program. We welcome all to apply!
  • Immunizations and physical
    The Phlebotomy Technician program, along with any healthcare program or occupation, requires proof of various immunizations and/or immunity, as well as a current physical. These will be required before beginning the externship; additional details are provided in the applicant consultation.
