Preparing for Placement (COMPASS) Tests

By preparing for the COMPASS placement tests, you will help ensure the most accurate test results and the best placement for you.


COMPASS Tests

No prior registration is required and there is no fee. You are allowed one retest during the dates specified by Testing Services. You must know your JCCC eight-digit ID number.

  • COMPASS testing is available on a walk-in basis (no appointment necessary) in Testing Services, during regular Testing Services hours.
  • You must present a current official photo I.D.
  • You must know your JCCC eight-digit ID number.
  • The test is not timed.
  • You should allow at least one hour for the mathematics or English section and at least two hours for the complete battery (English and math) or the ESL placement tests. You will not be allowed to begin either the English or math placement test less than one hour before lab closing, and you will not be allowed to begin the English/math combination placement test or the ESL placement test less than two hours before lab closing.
  • Calculators are permitted on the mathematics placement test. You may bring your own calculator, provided it is not above TI-86.
  • Math test format and study guides are available online.

Score reports are available immediately after testing. COMPASS placement scores in reading and writing are valid for five years from test date; COMPASS placement scores in math and ESL are valid for two years from test date.

Assessment Test Study Guides

JCCC provides the following study guides to help you prepare for the English and math assessment tests. Study guides are also available in Testing Services, Student Center 334, and in the Student Success Center, Student Center 253.

ASSET Tests: Offered Only in Special Circumstances

This placement test is a pencil and paper test for placement in mathematics and English courses, and is used only in special testing circumstances.

  • Arrangements must be made ahead of time.
  • You must present a current official photo I.D.
  • You must know your JCCC eight-digit ID number.
  • The test takes approximately 2-2.5 hours and is timed.
  • Calculators are permitted on all sections of the mathematics placement test with the exception of the numerical skills section. You may bring your own calculator, provided it is not above a TI-86.
  • Score reports are not available immediately. ASSET reading and writing scores are valid for five years from test date; ASSET math scores are valid for two years from test date.
