Do you need to report a violent act? Do you or a friend need help?

If you have an emergency

If you're on campus, call the JCCC Police Department at 913-469-2500 (913-339-6699 TDD/TTY).

If you are off campus, call 911 for immediate assistance.

What should I do?

  • Document the harassment. Photograph and keep copies of any evidence of harassment. Keep a journal with detailed information on instances of sexual harassment. Note dates, conversation, frequency of offensive encounters, etc.
  • Consider telling someone you trust about the incident or reach out to one of the community resources listed on this page. Some College officials are required to report information regarding sexual harassment to the Title IX Coordinator, so if you wish to keep your report confidential, you may wish to consult a resource, such as JCCC Counseling, that is not mandated to report.
  • If the harasser is a College student or employee, immediately report the harassment to one of the Title IX Coordinators.
  • Get to a safe location.
  • Record related behaviors (harassing phone calls, emails, social media posts, letters, acts of vandalism, threats). Record the date, time, and location of incidents, along with a description of what happened. Include names of witnesses. Take pictures of evidence (i.e., bodily injuries, damaged items). Recording such information can help document behavior for protection orders or criminal prosecution. As this information may be introduced as evidence or inadvertently shared with the perpetrator, don’t include any information you don’t want the offender to see.
  • If you are being or were harmed, seek medical attention. Treat all threats, direct or indirect, as legitimate and report them.
  • Consider telling someone you trust about the incident or one of the community resources on this page. Some College officials are required to report information regarding sexual violence to the Title IX Coordinator, so you may refer to confidential resources as well.
  • If you obtain external orders of protection (i.e., restraining orders, injunctions, protection from abuse), notify JCCC Police or a Title IX Coordinator so those orders can be observed on campus. If you need assistance with college-related concerns (i.e., no-contact orders or supportive measures), contact the Title IX Coordinator.
  • Get to a safe place.
  • It is important to preserve physical evidence that may include tissue and fluid samples, evidence of violence, clothing, etc. You may choose to avoid washing, bathing, urinating, etc., until after being examined at a hospital.
  • Go to an emergency department of an area hospital for a forensic exam. The forensic exam will assist with an investigation and potential prosecution. Evidence collected may be important to prove rape, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking and may assist in obtaining a protective order. There are designated hospitals that conduct sexual assault forensic exams and provide advocates from Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault (MOCSA).
  • If you have physical injuries, photograph or have them photographed with a date stamp. Record names of witnesses and their contact information. This may be helpful to the proof of the crime, to obtain an order of protection or to offer proof of a campus policy violation.
  • Consider telling someone you trust about the incidents(s) or one of the community resources on this page. Some College officials are required to report information regarding sexual violence to the Title IX Coordinator, so you may refer to confidential resources as well.
  • A restraining order is an order from a court that requires one party to do, or retrain from doing certain acts (i.e., it can prohibit another person from contacting you or being near you). If you have a court order, you should inform and provide JCCC Police with a copy of the order and/or Title IX Coordinator(s). JCCC can help to ensure that the restraining order or no contact order are followed on campus and at JCCC events. Even if you do not have a court order, JCCC may issue a no-contact order as part of its Title IX investigation and resolution procedures or take further protective action to minimize the interactions of the complainant and the respondent, such as rearranging college schedules or altering college employment arrangements.

Supportive measures

  • JCCC can offer or impose a variety of supportive measures to assist you. These services are available regardless of whether you choose to file a criminal or formal complaint and regardless of whether you choose to participate in a criminal or JCCC investigation.
  • Examples of supportive measures include, but are not limited to, academic accommodations, alternative work schedules/locations, course schedule changes, student financial aid assistance, health and mental health support, visa and immigration assistance and course withdrawal/load reductions.

JCCC prohibits retaliation against participants and witnesses who file a complaint or are participants in an investigation.
