The Greater Kansas City Writing Centers’ Project (GKCWCP) invites individuals and groups involved with Writing Center work to the 2026 GKCWCP Conference!
Historically, the GKCWCP Conference attracts tutors, teachers, and administrators from more than 15 area high schools, colleges, and universities for a day of high-quality, interactive professional development and networking. Attendees represent a range of Writing Center experience—from no experience to 20-plus years—and the conference program strives to offer a variety of session topics that will provide an intellectually stimulating day not only to those entering the field but also our most senior colleagues. These sessions include interactive workshops, paper presentations, mock tutorials, and a keynote.
The GKCWCP Conference provides training for tutors, while also creating a low-stakes, supportive professional development opportunity. This conference is a fantastic way to expose new tutors to a conference structure and for more experienced tutors to hone their presentation skills.
2026 Keynote Speaker: Ellen Mohr
Ellen Mohr is the founder and former Director of the Writing Center at Johnson County Community College. In 2007, she was awarded Professor Emeritus at JCCC, and in 2008 was a JCCC Wall of Honor recipient. Throughout her 27-year career at JCCC, she developed a peer tutor training program, designed countless resources for students and faculty, and oversaw several faculty development initiatives through the Center for Teaching and Learning, including Writing Across the Curriculum. In addition to her impact at JCCC, Ellen worked extensively with the writing center community in her three terms on the Executive Board of the International Writing Centers Association, through her service on the Executive Board of the Midwest Writing Centers Association, and by founding the Greater Kansas City Writing Centers Association. Her research has been published in a number of journals and books, including the IWCA’s Writing Lab Newsletter, Teaching English in the Two-Year College Journal, and the e-book Inside the Community College Writing Center: Ten Guiding Principles through IWCA Press. Her work in writing center pedagogy continues to be influential in writing centers across the world.
Outside of work, Ellen has involved herself in community service, working with organizations such as Heart to Heart, the Overland Park Arboretum, and the Johnson County Election Office. She enjoys traveling, as well as spending time with her family and friends.
High school and college writing center tutors and administrators are encouraged to attend in order to train and network with other people involved with Writing Center work in the metro. Writing instructors and professors are also invited to attend to share their experience with tutors and staff.
