Welcome Recruits,

The Johnson County Regional Police Academy would like to announce preparations have begun for the 147th Basic Academy Class. Please save the below link for easy access to the Police Academy Website. We are placing the class information on the website to allow our participating agencies time to acquire the necessary equipment.

Please take note of information concerning the Basic Academy Class:
To certify each recruit in the use of the Taser we now require the following:

  • Four Taser cartridges per recruit
  • One Taser per recruit

This information is available under “Firearms and DT Equipment."

Please take special note of the following information:

**Please erase, delete, or destroy all earlier copies of the Recruit Information Packet and the Firearms Information Packet.

  • Academy Blue will be the shirt color with a 5.11 Black Tactical Pant for the Basic Academy Class. Black t-shirt under the polo.
  • Room 124 and 125 will be the home classrooms for the Basic Academy Class.
  • The Basic Academy meets on a hybrid 5-day/8-hour and 4-day/10-hour schedule. The 5/8 weeks run Mon.-Fri., 0700-1530. The 4/10 schedule runs Mon.-Thurs., 0730-1730. Both schedules include a 30-minute lunch break.

Physical Training has 2 purposes: as preparation to pass the physical fitness tests and to prepare for police work. A strenuous exercise training regime will be expected while attending the academy. 

All recruits should arrive with baseline fitness levels as outlined below:
  • able to run 2 miles in 20-25 minutes
  • able to hold a plank position on forearms for 2 minutes
  • able to perform push ups without pause 36 (men) or 24 (women)
  • able to perform 40 full range-of-motion air squats in 1 minute

It is strongly advised to reach these minimum fitness levels before the 1st day of academy.

Here is a 6-week workout plan to help prepare for reaching baseline goals:

You should always seek medical clearance prior to starting any exercise program.

Week 1 & 2 - do at least 3 days per week:

  • Warm-up muscles and joints with movement and bring heartrate up to over l00bpm.
    Squats, lunges, kicks, jumping jacks, jumping rope, jogging, etc. (5-10 minutes)
  • Air Squats x15-20 reps, x3 sets
  • Jog or run 1 mile in 14 minutes or less
  • Stretch
  • Daily: Plank on forearms for 20 seconds, 3 sets
  • Daily: Pushups x4-10+ reps, 3 sets

Week 3 & 4 - do 4 days per week:

  • Warm-up muscles and joints with movement and bring heartrate up to over l00bpm.
    Squats, lunges, kicks, jumping jacks, jumping rope, jogging, etc. (5-10 minutes)
  • Air Squats x20 reps, x4 sets
  • Jog or run 1.5 miles in 20 minutes or less
  • Stretch
  • Daily: Plank on forearms for 25 seconds, 4 sets
  • Daily: Pushups x6-12+ reps, 4 sets

Week 5 & 6 - do 5 days per week:

  • Warm-up muscles and joints with movement and bring heartrate up to over l00bpm.
    Squats, lunges, kicks, jumping jacks, jumping rope, jogging, etc. (5-10 minutes)
  • Air Squats x20 reps, x5 sets
  • Jog or run 2 miles in 20 minutes or less
  • Stretch
  • Daily: Plank on forearms for 30 seconds, 5 sets
  • Daily: Pushups xB-15+ reps, 5 sets

Required Uniform Items:

The following uniform items are purchased by the recruit’s agency:

*Note: Recruits with visible tattoos must follow their department guidelines as to whether the tattoos must be covered or not.

*Recruit’s LAST name should be stenciled on the back of their PT t-shirt and sweatshirt using 2” black letters on the sweatshirt and t-shirt.

Required Physical Training Items

The following uniform items are required for Physical Training, to be purchased by the recruit or the recruit’s agency. Recruits are required to be in “uniform” appearance even during Physical Training. PT Sweatshirts, sweatpants, and shorts must show the Academy or Police Academy logo.

Required Items to be Purchased After Orientation

The following items should be purchased by the recruit. However, they will not be needed on the first day of class; please refrain from purchasing until after they have been discussed in Orientation.

Police Academy Location:

The Johnson County Regional Police Academy is located on the campus of Johnson County Community College (12345 College Blvd, Overland Park, KS 66210). The training facility is located on the NW side of campus, on Campus Drive, south of the College Blvd and Westgate entrance. Recruits should park in the parking lot on the west side of the building; refrain from parking along the south side. Orientation will be held in classroom PA 124.

Attendance:

Police Academy recruits shall attend all training sessions. Although emergencies do occasionally arise, absences should be kept to an absolute minimum. Recruits shall obtain prior approval from Academy staff prior to scheduling non-emergency activities.

College Credit:

During Orientation, all Police Academy recruits will be registered as students at Johnson County Community College and are eligible to receive 12 credit hours within the Administration of Justice curriculum. Veterans may be eligible for education benefits, and they should discuss this with college personnel during the registration process.

You will need the following items on day one.

  • Leather gear to include:
    • Belt
    • Handcuff case
    • OC Spray pouch
    • Holster
    • Magazine pouch/carrier
    • Inner belt with keepers if applicable
  • Handcuffs and key
  • Department issued expandable baton and holder
  • Groin protection (wait on this item, your DT instructors will provide specs.)
  • Mouth guard (wait on this item, your DT instructors will provide specs.)
  • Department issued handgun and magazines
  • Flashlight
  • Ballistic vest
  • Mat shoes

You will not need the following items until advised.

  • Handgun:
    • Eye and ear protection
    • 3,000 rounds applicable handgun practice ammo
    • 100 rounds (2 boxes) of 9mm “Simunition - BLANK” ammo. If you are unfamiliar with this newer round, contact Wade Willson.
    • 5 rounds of 12ga. less lethal ammo (Bean Bag, Super Sock, etc.)
  • Rifle:
    • Department issued Patrol Rifle
    • 1,000 rounds of rifle ammunition.
    • Qty 2 – 30 round magazines

To help with time, each officer should have their own rifle. If this cannot be done, two officers can share one long gun, but contact Instructor Willson first.

  • Taser: To certify each recruit we need the following equipment.
    • Four (4) Taser Cartridges (X26P, X2 and X7) per recruit.
    • One Taser per recruit.
    • Taser 10 users need: Minimum of 7 live cartridges and 5 HALT cartridges.
