How to Apply for the Metal Fabrication and Welding Program

Admission to this program requires approval from the Metal Fabrication and Welding department.

There are two ways to begin the MFAB Certificate program:

Full-time day schedule

With this schedule, you will earn the certificate in two semesters by taking courses during the day. This is the fastest way to complete this credential and get you on the path to becoming a welder. This schedule ONLY begins in August (fall semester). You will graduate the following May.

The program schedule is Monday through Friday. There are three cohorts:

  • 8 a.m. – 12:50 p.m.  (2 cohorts)
  • 12 p.m. – 4:50 p.m. (1 cohort)

*There are options for high school students to attend this program.  You will need to email the department as soon as possible to inquire about this path.

Part-time evening schedule

With this schedule, you will earn the certificate by taking courses part-time during the evening year-round. You can begin this schedule in the FALL or SPRING. If you’re able to take classes four days a week, it will take a minimum of three semesters. Classes are offered between 5 and 9:50 p.m. These classes are open enrollment and do not require department approval, but may have prerequisites.

Step 1 - Apply to JCCC and Declare Your Major

Use the online admissions application or apply with the assistance of an academic counselor.

You must declare 5380 Metal Fabrication/Welding Certificate as your major. If you intend to continue with the Associate of Applied Science degree, also declare 2460 MFAB AAS as your secondary major.

If you need to update your major, submit the Change of Major form.

Continuing to Steps 2 & 3 ONLY applies to those interested in the full-time day cohort schedule.

Step 2 - Department Wait List

If you are interested in the full-time day program, complete the form below. Spots for each schedule are on a first come, first served basis. Once the program is full, the waitlist is based on the order in which forms are received.

Note that the form becomes unavailable one week prior to the fall semester start and will reopen the week before the spring semester start for interest in the following fall.

Metal Fab/Welding student form

We recommend starting this process as soon as possible so you’re ready to enroll when open enrollment begins. (See academic calendars for specific dates.)

Evening classes are open enrollment and use the standard banner waitlist process.

Step 3 - Enroll

In response to your Step 2 form submission and shortly before enrollment begins, the Metal Fabrication department will contact you via your JCCC student email to inform you of the next steps to enroll. You MUST respond to receive department approval prior to registering for classes.

Important: Do not enroll in COMS 155 Workplace Skills or CMGT 100 Industrial Safety/OSHA 30 out of sequence (see course sequence). Several sections are available for this course, but daytime Metal Fabrication Technology students must take a specific section. Once you have department approval, we'll let you know in which section you need to enroll.

We highly recommend you pay for your courses as soon as possible (see academic calendars for specific dates). If you are dropped due to nonpayment, you could lose your spot to another candidate on the waitlist.

Books

You can view and purchase required class readings by visiting the campus bookstore or buying them online. The Bookstore online ordering system provides comparative pricing. Please bring textbooks to the first day of class.

Class Supplies (tools & personal protective equipment (PPE))

Tools and PPE range from $300 to $700 for the program. Do not purchase any tools before classes start. Your instructor will go over the tools you’ll need for your lab courses.
