Initiate immediate basic lifesaving care at the scene of an emergency.
Gain skills to provide emergency medical care
Emergency Medical Responders (EMR) are often the first to an emergency scene. EMRs provide initial lifesaving care while preparing patients for transport with additional EMS resources. They are part of a tiered response system and work alongside other EMS and health care professionals as an integral part of the emergency care team.
This 6-credit hour course is designed to teach students how to initiate immediate lifesaving care at the scene of medical emergencies. This course will provide insight and training into:
- Anatomy and physiology of the human body as it relates to medical emergencies.
- Basic patient assessment including vital signs.
- Recognition of pre-hospital emergencies and appropriate treatment.
- Hands-on skills used during medical and traumatic events.
EMR’s provide the initial care during 911 activation. You will understand their role in emergency pre-hospital care and the steps needed to continue your education in EMS.
Work as a trained EMR
Employment opportunities include agencies that provide emergency medical services, fire departments, rescue agencies, hospital specialty areas, and industry or government agencies. The average starting salary for an emergency medical responder in the KCMO area is $16 per hour.
