The ECG Technician Program is a nationally accredited ECG (electrocardiogram) certificate program through the National Healthcareer Association. In this program, students learn how to read and interpret ECGs by differentiating cardiac rhythms and electrical signals to appropriately monitor a patient’s heart. Students will be prepared to work with other healthcare professionals to translate the results.

Program overview

The ECG Technician program is a 57-hour program devising of classroom learning and practical training, including one day of clinical externship experience at Olathe Medical Center – University of Kansas Health System. During the externship, students will work one-on-one with ECG Technician staff in a variety of hospital units in performing successful ECGs, including Holter Monitors and echocardiograms.

Learning outcomes include:

  • This ECG Technician Certification Program prepares students to work as ECG Technicians and to sit for the Certified EKG Technician (CET) exam from the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
  • Students will learn how the heart works, including basic anatomy and physiology. The course also covers common heart conditions, medical terms, medical ethics, and legal guidelines for patient care.
  • Students will learn to read and interpret ECGs and differentiate cardiac rhythms.
  • Students will learn how to perform electrocardiograms (EKGs) and assist with stress testing. Hands-on labs are included. Students will practice using EKG machines, learn proper lead placement, and understand chest anatomy for accurate 12-lead EKGs.
