Learn everything you need to know about becoming a Diesel Technician student at Johnson County Community College.
Classes are held Monday – Thursday in the evening, from 5:30 – 9:30 p.m. There are 200 total classroom hours.
The first section (AUTO-300-2) is a 12-week course, held in the Hugh L. Libby Career and Technical Education Center (CTEC) 145.
We contract with Condensed Curriculum International (CCI) to provide all instruction, course supplies, equipment, and tools that you will need in the classroom. In addition, we are working with Murphy Tractor to provide a 20-hour externship for each student. This externship will take place at one of two Murphy Tractor locations:
- Primary: Olathe, 15854 S. US 169 Hwy, Olathe, KS 66062
- Secondary: KCMO, 8600 NE Parvin Rd, KCMO, 64161
Exact dates and times for student externships are currently being finalized. The externship will take place during the set class dates in four-hour windows, in either the morning or afternoon. You will be required to attend the ongoing evening course at the same time.
- Learn the role of the diesel technician in the automotive industry
- Identify and correctly utilize the hand tools, shop tools, precision tools, and measuring tools used in vehicle diagnosis and repair
- Perform basic maintenance tasks on vehicles, per their preventative maintenance schedules
- Perform electrical circuit calculations on vehicle electrical systems
- Verify battery performance and jump start vehicles with a dead battery
- Perform troubleshooting and maintenance tasks on vehicle hydraulic systems and vehicle transmission systems
- Troubleshoot a clutch for wear and damage
- Remove and reinstall various components of rear and front-end drivetrain, axle, steering and suspension systems
- Perform basic maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on wheels and tires, as well as vehicle braking systems
- Perform basic chassis frame maintenance and performance checks
- Inspect and service common types of fifth wheels and couplers
- Perform simple HVAC diagnoses procedures
- Perform basic engine system analysis and repair tasks
- Practice customer service in dealings with vehicle owners, vendors, and coworkers
You only need to bring steel-toed shoes. We provide all other tools for classroom use.
You will receive an ASE (G1) Auto Maintenance and Light Repair Certification upon successful completion of the program.
Our credit department offers an Automotive Technology (Maintenance and Light Repair) Certificate. This certificate takes 1 full year to complete and covers 25 credit hours.
Some employers are hiring individuals who have a background in car repair, but at a lower rate, and most require an internship period so that new hires can get up to speed.
