Campus Programs and Projects
A key element of the JCCC Strategic Plan approved by the college's board of trustees is that the college will "champion environmental sustainability in the curriculum and in the college infrastructure, transforming the physical campus into a living, learning laboratory." A number of projects are underway to make this rhetoric a reality. A few are highlighted below:
Southeast Quadrant Stormwater Project
JCCC Completed its $700,000 stormwater treatment project in the southeast corner of campus in August, 2010.
JCCC Farm
In fall 2010, the Northwest corner of campus was plowed to create what has now become a 2.5 acre farm, returning that portion of campus to the landscape it had been 40 years ago.
Solar Powered Composting
Our program will be one of the few composting programs in the United States using solar technology to to turn food waste into a valuable soil amendment, which will then be incorporated back into JCCC's farm. [more]
2010 Sustainability Report
This document is JCCC’s third campus-wide, fully participatory sustainability assessment which contains recommendations for further action as compiled by members of the college’s Sustainability Committee. Subcommittees of this larger group created this report and its recommendations. This report should not be seen as the final word on these issues, but rather should be compared to previous reports as an assessment of progress.
