Fire Science is essential to the health and safety of our communities. At Johnson County Community College, our Fire Science program including practical experience at off-site locations will prepare you for a rewarding career as a firefighter or fire safety professional.

What Will I Learn in JCCC's Fire Science Program?

In JCCC’s Fire Science program, you will gain the knowledge and skills to advance in a Fire Science career. Throughout our Fire Science courses, you’ll learn about:

  • Firefighter safety
  • Fire Behavior
  • Protective clothing and equipment
  • Firefighting techniques
  • Emergency response contingency plans
  • Fire investigation and laws of arson
  • Fire codes

Ignite your career through our stackable certificates with courses needed for employment in your local fire department, beginning with our Firefighter Certificate. In just two semesters, you will take the following classes:

  • EMS 129: Emergency Medical Responder
  • FIRE 112: Hazardous Materials Awareness & Operations
  • FIRE 113 Firefighter I
  • FIRE 114: Firefighter II
  • FIRE 115: Firefighter Practicum
  • EMS 132: Emergency Medical Technician

Advance your career with six core fire service courses through our Fire Administration Certificate, and then complete your Associate of Applied Science in Fire Science degree from JCCC.

You’ll get comprehensive training specifically designed to:

  • Describe the four critical leadership skills in the Crew Resource management program/

  • Summarize the NIOSH model for initial size-up of a fire.
