What Will I Learn in the Hotel and Lodging Management Program?

At Johnson County Community College, our Hotel and Lodging Management courses will prepare you for various career paths within the hospitality and tourism industry. You’ll start by studying service management as well as trends in tourism, lodging, and food and beverage. After gaining a broad perspective, you will explore specific areas and develop skills required for a career in Hotel and Lodging Management.

In four semesters and 64 credit hours, you will learn how to:

  • Successfully supervise a highly diverse team of people
  • Oversee food and beverage operations for maximum profit
  • Ensure excellence in housekeeping operations and foodservice sanitation
  • Effectively use business math, operational cost control and accounting strategies for the hospitality industry
  • Lead marketing and sales campaigns in highly competitive markets to an increasingly demanding clientele
  • Apply the fundamentals of professional food preparation and cooking
  • Follow laws and regulations as they apply to the hospitality and tourism industries

You can also choose from electives such as nutrition and meal planning, basic Spanish, and sales and marketing.

At the end of your studies, you will earn an Associate of Applied Science in Hotel and Lodging Management and be well prepared to start an exciting and challenging career in an ever-growing industry.

Classes Taught by Industry Experts

The instructors of our Hotel and Lodging Management program have many years of experience in the industry. They stay up to date on industry trends and bring their expertise into the classroom. You’ll get a comprehensive education in the Hotel and Lodging industry, including the basics of managing foodservice operations.

All Hospitality Management courses are dynamic and interesting with smaller class sizes, usually 20 to 25 students, for more one-on-one time with your instructors.

Career Development

We offer an active job board and internships for JCCC students as well as our Articulated Credit for Hospitality Management program for high school students to get a head start on college courses.

You will gain real-world experience in Hotel and Lodging Management before you graduate. Many courses require hands-on learning at local operations. You will learn about the multiple facets of the industry by working alongside seasoned professionals.

Hospitality Management Advisory Board

Our Hospitality Management Advisory Board provides expert advice on a variety of issues to ensure that students earning degrees or certificates from JCCC are prepared to enter the workforce and become immediately productive.

The board includes individuals who have experience in Hotel and Lodging Management. These industry experts can answer any questions you have about a career in the industry.

Opportunity for Travel

Hotel and Lodging Management is part of the tourism industry. Traveling to different areas across the country and around the globe will enhance what you learn in the classroom.

The JCCC Hospitality Management department regularly offers travel for credit courses, which means you can travel and earn credits toward your degree at the same time. Our students have traveled to Italy, Ireland, New York, Chicago and many other destinations.

Most graduates with an associate degree enter the field as management trainees or department supervisors. Jobs include:
