What will I learn?

You’ll use an assortment of flowering and ornamental plants to create beautiful arrangements that set a mood, tell a story or simply look stunning.

In two semesters you will learn to:

  • Understand the principles of traditional and contemporary design
  • Personalize flowers and greenery arrangements to tell a love story at a wedding
  • Use plants and flowers to enhance interior design
  • Run a retail flower shop, including how to manage the books

Enhance your studies with electives that cover:

  • Growing healthy herbaceous plants
  • Marketing a retail floral business
  • Managing your own small business, including legal issues


Let our professors guide you into this multibillion-dollar industry. With an emphasis on projects that incorporate both the creative and the technical, you’ll complete the program with an impressive portfolio that will showcase your work to potential employers.

We have connections to the profession: JCCC’s experienced Floral Design professors maintain strong ties to the industry.

Clubs at JCCC give you another opportunity to build your résumé and network with your peers. Join the Floral Design Club to learn about marketing, merchandising, buying and designing flower arrangements. You could share your visionary designs at the Pastry and Petals Sale, held Friday afternoons during fall and spring semesters in the Wylie Hospitality and Culinary Academy.

You can also join the Interior Design Student Association (IDSA). Members network with professionals in American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), International Interior Design Association (IIDA) and National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA).

Area business seek out JCCC graduates because they know our students are getting a layered education from industry pros.

Complete the Floral Design certificate and join the workforce within a year, or continue your studies and earn an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in interior design, marketing or any other field that interests you. Transfer to a four-year school to pursue a degree, such as a Bachelor of Science in Horticulture at Kansas State University. Your opportunities are wide open.
