Smart Start Orientation

Are you new to JCCC or college in general? Are you really ready for the start of classes?

Sign up for a Smart Start session – a short academic orientation that teaches you how to manage your study schedule, navigate JCCC and get your best start to college!

At the Smart Start Academic Orientation, you will:

  • Get help navigating JCCC and your classes
  • Learn to be organized
  • Create a study schedule
  • Log in to your student email and Canvas

Plan to spend 50 minutes in your Smart Start session. If you do not see a time that works for your schedule, email aac@jccc.edu to schedule a special Smart Start time. Sign up for a session by clicking the link below. This link will prompt you to sign in to Penji through your JCCC SSO (Single Sign On). 

If it is your first time using Penji: The first time you access Penji, you will see a pop-up that asks you to create an account. Click the “Create Account” button to move forward. Then, use your JCCC SSO to sign in. For help accessing Penji for the first time, please watch this tutorial.

If you have used Penji before: Click the link above and sign in with your JCCC SSO (Single Sign On).”
Click “Join Event,” select a time and delivery method (in-person or online) that works for you, and click “Join Event” again.

ACCUPLACER Preparation

Prepare for the ACCUPLACER test to ensure you get in the right classes for your knowledge level. We use an online training and skill-improvement software system to help identify areas that you need to review.

Visit or contact the AAC to set up your account. Once your account is set up, you may work independently on the review from any computer with internet access.

Basic Technology

You’ll work one-on-one with a professional to build your technology skills. Drop in to meet with a Learning Specialist to improve your skills in the following areas:

  • The Basics
  • Campus Technology
  • Hardware
  • Software
  • Downloading and Uploading Files
  • Information Safety and Security
  • Software for Presentations
  • Word Processing Software
  • File Extensions
  • Using PDFs

College English

You’ll work one-on-one with a professional to build your College English skills. Drop in to meet with a Learning Specialist to improve your skills in the following areas:

  • Speaking and Pronunciation
  • Listening
  • Grammar
  • Writing
  • Idioms
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Occupational Vocabulary
