Health Information Systems lands in-demand partnership

The largest health IT organization in the world welcomes JCCC as an Educational Partner.

The Health Information Systems program at Johnson County Community College recently received a big validation for its hard work preparing students.

JCCC's program received the designation of Education Partner from the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS).

Prestigious honor

To the outsider, HIMSS is just a bunch of letters, but for those in the field of healthcare information technology, praise from HIMSS is huge.

Lori Brooks, associate professor of HIS at the College, explained, "HIMSS is the largest health IT organization in the world, and they have given their 'stamp of approval' to our program at JCCC. This is a prestigious honor because it puts our program in a very exclusive group of organizations allowed to provide HIMSS training and education."

Brooks said HIMSS has "a tremendous amount of valuable resources" that faculty and students can now access.

Proving value of HIS program

Getting the designation of Education Partner wasn't easy. Brooks said a team from JCCC:

  • Completed a lengthy application
  • Submitted to an in-depth program review process
  • Provided information on course content
  • Supplied the resumes of course designers, instructors and subject matter experts
  • Shared how instructors are hired and how the program is marketed
  • Showed how curriculum is updated and enhanced

Mara L. Daiker, senior manager of professional development for HIMSS, said JCCC "establishes itself apart from others" by gaining the Education Partner designation.

"With program objectives focused on specialized industry skills for both the healthcare or IT workforce, the program is well aligned with the objectives of our HIMSS program," she said.

About Health Information Systems

Students in the Health Information Systems program at JCCC learn the crucial computer systems that medical professionals use to run their business. They also receive training in the hardware and software used in healthcare for goals such as:

  • Electronic health records
  • Secure health-information exchange
  • Systems development and set-up

"This distinction validates everything we do at JCCC to prepare our students for employment and growth in the health IT industry," Brooks said. "It also sets the bar high for continued growth of our program."

JCCC offers an Associate of Science degree with emphasis in Health Information Systems (63-64 credits) and a Health Information Systems Specialist Certificate (27 credits).

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates these jobs will grow at a rate much faster than average by 2024.
