Instructors have provided the following information to generally describe what to expect in their classes.

Math

Class Format

Face-to-face sections:  Typically, my classes are a traditional lecture format. I provide notes and examples while asking for student input and participation. Students often work in groups and spend time discussing material while completing problem sets.

Online sections depend on the textbook, with videos to watch, and online homework and quizzes. Deadlines are enforced, and tests are taken in the Testing Center on paper. Most communication with the instructor is by email.

Resource Use

Textbooks

Textbooks are an essential part of a math class; either a physical copy or an e-book is needed.

Calculators

A graphing calculator is needed in Math 171 or above.  A scientific calculator is needed for Math 115 or 116.

Computer software

Regardless of class, students are expected to check Canvas, the online course management system used by JCCC, to regularly view extra handouts and announcements. Grades will be updated on Canvas. Online classes are based in Canvas and MyMathLab.

Assessment

Every course will have exams and a comprehensive final. Depending on the level and course schedule, courses will have quizzes during the semester to assess your understanding at more frequent intervals. Homework is assigned, as well as, additional practice problems.

Homework Policy

Please check the syllabus for the course for specific homework policies.

Attendance Policy

Students are strongly encouraged to maintain regular attendance. It is much easier to learn the material when you are in class and actively engaging in the course material. Your absence may affect your grade because of your subsequent lack of knowledge and understanding. It is worth noting that excessive absence (or non-participation in online courses) may lead to instructor-initiated withdrawal.

Availability

I am available during office hours and each in-class day as noted in the syllabus. I try to respond to student emails within 12 to 24 hours; it may be later on weekends. I am also available by appointment. Please check with me, as I am often out for Quick Step responsibilities.
