Instructors have provided the following information to generally describe what to expect in their classes.

Math

Class Format

Face-to-face sections are a casual lecture style with students encouraged to participate, discuss and ask questions along the way.  Classes will typically begin with time to ask questions about previous material or homework due.

Resource Use

Textbooks are used primarily to supplement the lecture and as a resource for the students to use while completing homework. Students who wish to purchase an e-book instead of a traditional textbook are encouraged to do so. If I use the textbook in lecture, I typically project the page for the entire class to see.

Calculators are used in nearly every class session for all courses. A scientific calculator is required for courses below College Algebra, with the exception of Business Math. A financial calculator is required for Business Math. I recommend and use a TI-84 calculator for College Algebra and higher level courses.

Computer software use depends on the course but could include MyMathLab, Microsoft Excel, StatCrunch, and/or quizzes within Canvas.

Online homework is used extensively for any class where it is available. Business Math homework is completed through Canvas, while other courses utilize MyMathLab.

Assessment

Most classes have 4 – 6 exams and a departmental final exam. Some classes have in-class and/or take-home quizzes. Tests may be taken early in the Testing Center with permission, but not late. No makeup quizzes or exams will be given. For most courses, the lowest test score will be replaced by the final exam percentage if it benefits the student.

Homework Policy

Homework is assigned and graded regularly. Some classes have online homework through Canvas or in MyMathLab. In some courses, homework will not be accepted late due to software constraints. With MyMathLab homework, homework can be completed late with a minimum penalty of 40%.

Attendance Policy

There is no grade penalty for non-attendance. However, an absence may affect the final grade because of missed material, quizzes, or exams. A weekly schedule is available at the beginning of the semester for students to follow in the event they are unable to attend class.

I am typically available by appointment or in the Math Resource Center.

Additional Information

I strongly encourage my students to use the Math Resource Center. This service is available to all JCCC math students and is free of charge. In order to succeed in mathematics, students are expected to regularly practice problems, review previous material, be prepared for classes, and be involved in the class while attending. Mathematics, like a language, typically requires repetition and review to remain proficient.
