Instructors have provided the following information to generally describe what to expect in their classes.

Math

Class Format

Face-to-face sections are generally whole group lectures with occasional individual practice, and group work. Computational examples, applications, and theory are also included. Students are encouraged to participate. For Math 181 and below, I provide fill-in-the-blank class notes to follow the lecture.

Online/ONOSE sections include video instruction with online homework as well as written work that must be submitted for grading. The online homework can generally be repeated for mastery. Deadlines are enforced. Most communication with the instructor will be via email and Zoom meetings.

Resource Use

Textbooks are used to supplement the lecture, especially if you are absent. In all courses (except Math 120) for which online homework is used, the textbook can be accessed as an eText through online homework software. In the rare instance that online homework will not be used, the textbook will be required.

Calculators are used in every course. The appropriate use of calculators is discussed in many contexts. Math 120 requires either a TI-BAII or TI-83/84 calculator. In Math 171 and above, a graphing calculator is required. Check with the instructor or syllabus about the specific calculator needed for your course.

Computer software is used in Statistics and generally available through online homework. Math 120 requires access to Microsoft Excel, which is available for student use in the Math Resource Center.

Online homework is used extensively for most courses where it is available and required in all Online/ONOSE sections.

Assessment

All classes have homework (online, written or both), 3 – 4 unit exams, and a final exam. Roughly 70 – 80% of the grade will be determined by quizzes/exams, and 20% by the homework and other course material.

Homework Policy

In courses numbered 181 and below, homework will be collected and count toward the semester grade. This homework must be turned in on time to receive credit. For other courses, textbook homework is assigned for practice but is not checked. However, in these courses, other assignments may be collected for a grade.

Attendance Policy

Your absence may affect your grade because of your subsequent lack of knowledge and understanding.  However, absences are NOT part of the grade.  Makeup quizzes/exams are not given after the exam date.  The final exam score can be used to replace 1 lower quiz/exam score.

Availability

Your absence may affect your grade because of your subsequent lack of knowledge and understanding.  However, absences are NOT part of the grade.  If an absence is anticipated, assignments can sometimes be turned in early to receive credit. To be fair to all students, no exams may be taken after the scheduled exam date due to absence. However, the final exam score may be used to replace any missed exam score.
