Instructors have provided the following information to generally describe what to expect in their classes.

Math

Class Format

Face-to-face sections are moderately-paced, and student participation is encouraged. Lecture notes are copied and posted to Canvas following each class. Theory and numerous examples are provided in the notes to serve as a guide for the assigned homework problems. Students are encouraged to come to office hours and make use of the Math Resource Center to get questions answered immediately. Test reviews are provided for all exams.

Online sections of Math 111, 115 and 116 will utilize MyMathLab, and Math 120 will utilize Canvas for instruction, delivered in the form of video lectures, practice problems, homework, and quizzes or unit exams. All online students are required to take their midterm and final exams on the JCCC campus, or at an approved proctoring site if they live out of the area.

Resource Use

A textbook is required for all face-to-face classes, as well as for Math 120 online (hard copy or ebook). A purchased MyMathLab access code is required for online sections of Math 111, 115 and 116, and the purchase of a textbook is also recommended for online Math 115 and 116.

Calculators are required in every course:

Math 111 – Only a basic calculator (without a +/- key) is permitted.

Math 120 - A financial calculator or graphing calculator is required. Typical models include TI BA II Plus, TI-84, or HP-10B11.

Math 115 – Only a basic or scientific calculator is permitted. No graphing calculators may be used in Math 115.

Math 116, 171, 231 all require at least a scientific calculator. A graphing calculator may be used, but is not required.

Phone calculators are prohibited in all math classes.

Assessment

Grades in face-to-face classes are based on homework, 3 unit exams, and a departmental comprehensive final exam.

Online class grades are based on homework and quizzes (or unit exams), a midterm exam, and a departmental comprehensive final exam. Math 120 online also includes required spreadsheets.

Late penalties for homework and quizzes vary, depending on the course. Make-up exams are not permitted. The comprehensive final exam grade may replace up to two or more previous unit exam grades, depending on the course.
