Instructors have provided the following information to generally describe what to expect in their classes.

Math

Class Format

Face-to-Face sections – Are typically moderately-paced, whole group lecture sessions with an emphasis on conceptual understanding with frequent student input and participation.  Lecture note packets are provided in most classes.

Online/ONOSE sections – Varies by course.  Includes online lecture videos, online homework and assessments, and communication through email, Canvas, and/or textbook publisher’s online software.

  • *ONOSE sections are required to come to campus at JCCC to take exams.

Resource Use

Textbooks – The required textbook will typically be in the form of an ebook with the option to purchase a physical textbook.  In all courses textbooks supplement the lecture (especially if you are absent) and provide practice problems.

Calculators – Used in every course.  The type of calculator (scientific or graphing) needed will vary by course being taught.  Statistics courses will require a graphing calculator.

Computer software – Computer software is used extensively in statistics courses, which may include StatCrunch, Excel, applets, or other relevant software.

Online homework – Courses will use online homework and/or quizzes extensively (and may also use traditional pen-paper homework and/or quizzes).

Assessment

Classes have homework (online and/or pen-paper), quizzes, unit exams, and a final exam. Approximately 70% of the overall grade will be determined by the unit and final exams, and 30% by the homework and other material in the course.  Extra credit is offered occasionally.

Homework Policy

Homework may be submitted after the due date with a late penalty, but for fairness considerations I reserve the right to refuse late homework for any reason.

Attendance Policy

Your absence may affect your grade because of your subsequent lack of knowledge/understanding and missed graded material.  In some courses, attendance may count directly towards the course grade.  Makeup unit exams are not given after the exam date. The final exam percentage may replace a missed unit exam.
