Instructors have provided the following information to generally describe what to expect in their classes.

Math

Class Format

Face-to-face sections are student-centered. Whole group sessions constitute the primary format for lecture, with frequent student input and participation. Theory is explained, followed by applications and examples. Emphasis is placed on reasoning and critical thinking.

Resource Use

Textbooks are used through the online platform of MyMathLab (MML). Chapter outlines are provided in class to assist in note-taking, but do not replace the importance of reading through each section of material covered. The online textbook affords students many resources not available through the use of a printed text only. Students are encouraged to acquaint themselves with the MML platform and take advantage of the extra features.

Calculators are required. The use of a phone or any other electronic device as a calculator is strictly prohibited on assessments. It is good practice to use the same calculator and become familiar with its features so that you use it efficiently on assessments.

Computer software is used through MML, which is an online platform (no need to download anything). No other software is needed.

Online homework is used extensively through MML.

Assessment

Exams: There are approximately four exams per class throughout the semester. Exams are closed-book (no notes), but use of a calculator is acceptable. In class exams are comprise approximately 50% of the final grade for the course. The final exam is cumulative and comprises approximately 20% of the final grade for the course.

Quizzes: A two-question quiz is given at the culmination of each class period. Each quiz will typically cover the previous class’s material. Quizzes are open note, but must be completed individually. There are no make-up quizzes if you are absent or leave class early. The lowest quiz grade of the semester is dropped. Quizzes comprise approximately 10% of the final grade for the course. 

Homework Policy

Homework is completed online through MML and comprises approximately 20% of the final grade for the course. Due to fairness considerations, late work is NOT accepted.

Attendance Policy

Your absence may affect your grade because of your subsequent lack of knowledge and understanding.  Makeup in-class exams are not given after the exam date.  The final exam percentage will replace any missed in-class exam.
