Instructors have provided the following information to generally describe what to expect in their classes.
Math
Courses Taught
015 (Elementary Algebra), 116 (Intermediate Algebra), 120 (Business Math), 130 (Tech Math I), 151 (Contemporary Math), 171 (College Algebra), 181/201 (Statistics), 231 (Business Calculus I)
Class Format
Face-to-Face: A traditional lecture with in-class practice individually or in groups is used.
Online/ONOSE: Asynchronous instruction is used for online course formats. I provide video lectures and also provide access to publisher-created lessons in Hawkes Learning Systems and ALEKS.
Resource Use
Textbooks are optional for all courses. eBook access is part of the required online materials for all classes whether taught face-to-face or online/ONOSE.
Calculators are used to supplement learning. The appropriate use of calculators is discussed in many contexts. Graphing calculators (TI-84+ highly recommended) are used in courses number 116 and higher. Scientific calculators are used in courses numbered below 116.
Computer software is used for all homework. I use ALEKS and Hawkes Learning Systems.
Online homework is used extensively for all courses.
Assessment
Typically, a student’s grade will be composed of scores on homework, unit exams, and the final exam. Math 120 also has spreadsheet assignments as part of its assessment.
Homework Policy
Homework is due weekly (typically Sunday nights). It will be turned in using an online homework system (normally ALEKS, Hawkes Learning, or in the case of Math 120, Canvas). Homework is an essential part of the learning process. It provides both practice and review opportunities in preparing for the unit exams.
Attendance Policy
Face-to-face: Although regular attendance is a necessary part of success in any math course, it is not required as part of your grade. Attendance will be taken for the first couple of weeks of class to get to know the class, and attendance will be reported before census day to adhere to federal regulations.
Online: Each student must complete four tasks within the first week in each online course in order to establish their attendance for the course:
- Register in the required online homework system
- Complete the first homework assignment
- Email me using either their @stumail.jccc.edu address or Canvas email
- Sign and submit the start-up checklist found in the syllabus which contains important information such as on-campus test dates.
