Instructors have provided the following information to generally describe what to expect in their classes.

Math

Class Format

Face-to-face sections are typically moderately-paced, whole group lecture sessions with an emphasis on conceptual understanding. Computational examples, applications, and theory are also included. Students are encouraged to ask questions and participate.

Online sections depend on the textbook. The online homework can be repeated for mastery. Deadlines are enforced. Most communication with the instructor will be by email, but I am also available for meetings in person and on the phone.

Resource Use

Textbooks are required for any face-to-face course. For online courses an ebook will be required which is generally bundled with the online program.  Textbooks supplement the lecture (especially if you are absent), and provide practice problems. Textbook exercises are part of the graded homework for face-to-face classes.

Calculators are used in every course. In Math 120, a financial calculator is required. In Math 171 and above, a graphing calculator is required. In any other course, a scientific calculator is sufficient.

Computer software, whenever needed, will be available for student use in the Math Resource Center. In Math 120, MS Excel will be used. In any statistics course, statistical software will be used. In every math course, web-based materials may be used.

Online homework is required for all online courses. Face-to-face courses will typically not use online homework.

Assessment

Most classes have homework in some form. Generally problems from the book for face-to-face and from an online source for online courses. There are usually between 3 to 5 unit exams, and a final exam. Roughly 80% of the grade will be determined by the unit and final exams, and 20% by the homework and other material in the course.

Homework Policy

Homework is assigned nearly every class period. Homework is due the following class period after it is assigned. Late homework is accepted one class period late but has a penalty attached.

Attendance Policy

Your absence may affect your grade because of your subsequent lack of knowledge and understanding. However, absences are NOT part of the grading formula. Makeup unit exams are not allowed unless you contact me and make arrangements in advance. The final exam percentage will replace one missed exam for a face-to-face class. Online courses generally require a midterm and final exam that must be completed on campus or at an approved testing location.

Availability

As an adjunct, my hours vary by the courses I am teaching that particular semester.  Responses to emails normally occur within 12 hours, but possibly longer on weekends.
