Instructors have provided the following information to generally describe what to expect in their classes.
Math
Class Format
Typical Class Format - In Face-to-face sections a typical class will begin with homework questions followed by a short conceptual review of the previous material. After that, new material is presented with time for examples. Students are expected to take notes in class. Occasionally class time is used for working on homework, quizzes or exams.
In any of the Online sections (ONOSE or Online), students are not meeting in person except for any listed exam times or for optional office hours.
Resource Use
Physical Textbooks are optional for all courses for which online homework is used since the textbooks are offered online in those cases. Otherwise they may be required.
Calculators are used and required in most courses. In most courses TI-84 is the default calculator, with some exceptions such as in Business Math a BA-II is also appropriate.
Computer software is used in most courses for homework and learning aids, and in particular Excel is used as the default tool instead of a calculator for Math 161.
Online homework is used in most courses, which may include websites such as Canvas, MyMathLab, WebAssign or ALEKS.
Assessment
Typically, a student’s grade will be composed of scores on homework, quizzes, exams, and the final exam. Periodically there are extra credit opportunities
Homework Policy
Homework is typically assigned in whatever online system that is being used. Assignments have due dates but typically they can be turned in late at reduced credit. In the case that there isn’t an online system being used, homework may be assigned from the textbook instead.
Attendance Policy
Students should plan to attend every class meeting; attendance is typically taken each class and recorded. Students should expect that any missed class time will result in an incomplete understanding of the material. This, in turn, may also adversely affect grades. If an absence is anticipated, assignments can be turned in before class time to receive credit. No exams may be taken after the scheduled exam date due to absence. However, the final exam score may be used as a replacement for missed or lower unit exam scores if it is lower than the final exam score.
