What will I learn?

Learn the language of one of the world’s fastest growing economies. Knowing Chinese can help you break into the exciting field of international relations and earn your place on the global stage.

You will learn:

  • Basic sounds and characters in Chinese
  • How to read Chinese
  • Basic conversational skills in Chinese
  • About Chinese traditions and gain greater cultural understanding

You can take Elementary Chinese I (FL 165) and move on to Elementary Chinese II (FL 166).  This sequence meets the foreign language requirement for many bachelor’s degrees at four-year schools. Our Chinese courses are guaranteed by the Kansas Board of Regents to transfer to all Kansas public postsecondary institutions


Our professors make your learning experience fun and interesting with practical applications and lots of in-class activities.

As a Chinese student at JCCC, you have access to:

  • Free, personal tutoring in the Language Resource Center (LRC)
  • Smaller class sizes taught by native or near-native Chinese speakers
  • Interactive teaching methods such as small group and one-on-one pairings
  • Friendships with Chinese-speaking students through the International Club

For the ultimate immersion experience, you can participate in JCCC’s Study Abroad program in China each year.

Studying Chinese could increase your opportunities for a job, scholarship or fellowship. Chinese is the second-largest language community on the internet, with more than 800 million speakers connected to the web.

You could have a lucrative career as an online Chinese translator or as a translator in the U.S. for thousands of tourists and businesspeople who visit. You also might work for an international Chinese company or one of the many U.S. companies who do business with China.
