Learn the principles of fresh floral design that prepare you to be an entrepreneur in the floral design industry.

What will I learn?

This program is hands-on and practical. Every week, you will create a fresh floral design. You also will complete the program able to name more than 300 flowers and plants and identify how they are best used in a floral arrangement.

The basic principles taught in this certificate will prepare you for a diverse and creative career in the floral industry. You will begin with the fall semester and, over the next three semesters, learn to:

  • Create, arrange and stage wedding flowers
  • Grow and maintain houseplants
  • Manage a retail flower shop, including the business and creative aspects
  • Prepare large-scale floral designs for big special events
  • Design sympathy flowers

Our Floral Design Certificate is the only one of its kind in the Kansas City area and the state of Kansas. When you complete your certificate, you will have an impressive portfolio that showcases your work throughout each semester. You also will be ready to launch your career with a strong foundation of knowledge about all aspects of this multibillion-dollar industry.

Our faculty has more than 40 years of experience in the industry and stays current with design trends and techniques through ties with the industry. We use our connections within the floral design profession to provide multiple field trips to local wholesale florists and periodic opportunities to create designs for industry shows.

The hands-on nature of the program also allows you to work on designs for:

  • Special events at JCCC
  • Off-site special events
  • Holidays such as Thanksgiving, Valentine’s Day, Easter, Administrative Assistant’s Day and Mother’s Day
  • On-campus flower sales

You will gain firsthand experience growing plants in JCCC’s greenhouse — an opportunity no other regional program offers. Join the Floral Design Club to gain experience in marketing, merchandising, buying and designing floral products.

When you’re ready to graduate, job placement in this field is excellent. Demand in retail and grocery stores is growing for floral designers who are ready to design starting on day one. Your opportunities in this field are numerous with the potential to move into managerial positions, start your own business or specialize in weddings and events.

Complete the Floral Design certificate and join the workforce within a year, or continue your studies and earn an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in interior design, marketing or any other field that interests you. Transfer to a four-year school to pursue a degree, such as a Bachelor of Science in Horticulture at Kansas State University. Your opportunities are wide open.
