Off Campus Employment for F-1 and M-1 Visa Students

There are four possible options for off campus employment for F-1 visas and 1 for I-20 students with M-1 visas. For all of these however, I-20 students with F-1 and M-1 visas are required to receive permission in writing on page three of their I-20 before beginning employment.

F-1 visa students may be authorized to work off campus if approved for:

  • Curricular practical training (CPT)
  • Optional practical training (OPT)
  • Economic hardship
  • Special Student Relief

M-1 visa students may be authorized to work off campus if approved for:

  • Optional practical training (OPT) - post completion only
  • Career Development - offers help in preparing for and finding a job, including networking, applying for a job, creating a resume, preparing for information and employment interviews and writing thank-you notes and cover letters.
