Instructors have provided the following information to generally describe what to expect in their classes.

Math

Class Format

Face-to-face sections are typically moderately-paced, whole group sessions with an emphasis on conceptual understanding.  Computational examples, applications, and theory are also included.  Students are encouraged to participate.  Lecture style with some guided practice.

Online sections: None

Resource Use

Textbooks are essential  for learning the content.  For face-to-face classes  textbooks supplement the lecture (especially if you are absent), and provide practice problems. Many of the even problems are done as examples in class discussion. In all classes, some textbook exercises will be part of the graded homework.

Calculators are used in every course.   In Math 171 and above, a graphing calculator is required.  In any other course, a scientific calculator is sufficient.

Assessment

Most classes have homework in some form, 4 or 5 unit exams, and a final exam.    Roughly 70% of the grade will be determined by the unit and final exams, and 30% by the homework and worksheets and/or other material in the course.

Homework Policy

Homework is assigned for each section covered and is handed in on the test date for points.  Late homework is 50% off credit for three days then no credit after that.

A worksheet is given at each class due the next class session worth 10 points.  Late penalty of 50% off.

Attendance Policy

Your absence may affect your grade because of your subsequent lack of knowledge and understanding.  However, absences are NOT part of the grading formula.  Makeup unit exams are not given after the exam date.  The final exam percentage will replace any missed unit exam.

Availability

I am available before or after class.  Responses to emails normally occur within 12 hours, but possibly longer on weekends.
