Instructors have provided the following information to generally describe what to expect in their classes.

Biology

Class Format

Lectures are taught using a combination of PowerPoint presentations and board writing.

Laboratories include some lecture material at the beginning of each class in addition to visual demonstrations of relevant techniques presented.

Resource Use

Textbooks: Used extensively throughout all courses.

Additional Materials: Frequent addition of concepts or materials not covered in the text will be included. Students are also expected to make use of further resources including the Internet and library to fill in any relevant details not covered.

Assessment

Exams and pop quizzes are used for all classes with short answer/essay questions predominating as I feel these types of questions provide the greatest understanding and retention of the material. Occasionally a few multiple choice or matching-type questions may be used, but infrequently. Additionally, lab exams include both written and practical components.
All classes include submission of periodic assignment and/or reports.

Homework Policy

Late assignment acceptance is determined on a case-by-case basis. Generally, I will accept late submissions for partial credit by the next class period. Quizzes can not be made up if late or absent.

The student must be present the day a lab is performed, unless acceptable circumstances have been approved by the instructor, or that lab report will not be accepted for points.

Attendance Policy

Students are expected to be responsible and attend all class meetings. Attendance will not be taken in the lecture classes. For laboratory sections, attendance is taken, but will not be included in course grading. Lab attendance is used to determine eligibility to submit lab reports.

Students are expected to use the syllabus and schedule to remain current with missed material. This includes the responsibilities of reading the assigned chapters and obtaining any additional notes from classmates, if necessary.

Availability

Emails sent through the online learning platform are the quickest and most efficient means of contacting me. I am also willing to schedule appointments with students when needed, and strive to be available before and after class on most days.
