Values of Global Awareness Scholars

  • Curiosity: The desire to know more and answer the question of “why” drives people to explore the unknown and the unfamiliar.
  • Open-Mindedness: When we seek to know more, we will inevitably be challenged with thoughts, beliefs, and perspectives that do not match our own. Even in the face of this discomfort, we must be willing to learn more and suspend judgment so that we can gain an understanding, regardless of whether we agree or disagree with it.
  • Empathy: When we understand context and perspectives, we can develop empathy, which is the ability to understand the perspective of another.
  • Respect: We recognize that humans have differences in the way they think and believe. We recognize that we can respect the views of others even when that viewpoint differs from our own.
  • Humility: We recognize and intentionally challenge the tendency to accept the beliefs we learned to be “correct” or “superior” by default. We are able to change our minds based on new information.
  • Reflection: Through learning about others, we learn about ourselves. We analyze where our beliefs and perspectives have come from and we are willing to make changes. We understand that our beliefs and behaviors impact our experience. We reflect on our impact and we make changes accordingly.
