- Transition Into Postsecondary Studies (TIPS)
As a college-bound high school senior with an IEP or 504 plan, you can experience college with extra support and encouragement as you prepare to take regular college courses.
If you are a high school student with an IEP or 504 plan and are planning to attend college, JCCC’s College Success Strategies for TIPS course can prepare you for success. The course can be taken for one semester during your senior year of high school. Held on the JCCC campus, the course gives you the opportunity to: :
- Experience college with extra support and encouragement from faculty and staff
- Attend a section of JCCC’s College Success Strategies course
- Develop strong self-advocacy skills and alleviate fears regarding college
- Identify and develop personal strengths through the CliftonStrengths
- Be actively involved in an exciting, cutting-edge curriculum
Success Starts with the College Success Strategies for TIPS Course
In this course, you will learn how to:
- Read a college textbook effectively
- Take meaningful lecture notes
- Integrate lecture and reading notes
- Prepare for and take exams
- Practice time management principles
- Master an electronic learning management system
- Use critical thinking skills
- Explore career options
- Navigate a college campus
- Access college resources
First — you’ll learn how to apply these methods to your high school or other college classes.
Second — the methods will help you meet the higher level demands of your college work.
Third — you’ll receive 3 JCCC degree elective credit hours, which count toward college graduation as part of a degree program.

As a high school senior with an IEP or 504 plan who is ready for the rigors of college courses, follow these steps to enroll in the College Success Strategies for TIPS course:
- You’ll need a referral from your high school special education representative or counselor.
- Your representative or counselor will contact the College Success Transition Program Coordinator for a TIPS application.
- You’ll need to complete a JCCC application at least one week before the orientation.
- After the TIPS orientation, you’ll enroll in the College Success Strategies for TIPS
In order to enroll in the TIPS course, you must:
- Be a current high school senior from a participating high school.
- Have approval from your special education representative or counselor, as well as a JCCC College Success Transition Program Coordinator
- Meet the requirements and complete the College Success Strategies for TIPS application before being allowed to enroll
- Attend classes at JCCC Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons
- Have your own transportation to and from JCCC
- Pay for this 3 credit hour class and purchase the textbook
