Each November, students, faculty, and staff at Johnson County Community College (JCCC) honor veterans and members of the military during Veterans Week.

JCCC hosts a variety of events to celebrate Veterans Week leading up to Veterans Day on November 11, including:

  • A Veterans Oral History Panel with three women veterans of the U.S. Marine Corps was presented on Thursday, November 7.
  • JCCC Student Veterans of America will join other student veterans from KCKCC and UMKC to run the Spencer C. Duncan 5K virtual run together at Loose Park on Saturday, November 9.
  • Taps will be played to commemorate Veterans Day on November 11, at 11:00 a.m. More information on this event is included below.

10 Years of the Veteran and Military Student Resource Center

2024 marks the 10-year anniversary of a dedicated space on JCCC’s campus where veterans and military-connected students (children and spouses) can find guidance, resources, and connections. JCCC’s Veteran and Military Student Resource Center first opened on November 11, 2014.

“Our services are based on the concept of veterans serving veterans,” said Kena Zumalt, Program Director, Veteran and Military Student Services. “The Center supports JCCC student veterans in their transition from military to civilian and college life and provides military-connected students with the tools to succeed in meeting their educational and career goals.”

The Center is not just for JCCC student veterans. JCCC is a Johnson County field office for the Kansas Commission on Veterans Affairs. A Veteran Services Officer helps veterans from the community and their family members file claims with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs at the Center on JCCC’s main campus.

Veterans Day Taps on the Hill Ceremony

On November 11, JCCC will host ‘Taps on the Hill,’ an annual tradition honoring all those who have served our country defending our freedom.

This event is held at 11 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month on the hill just south of the Commons on JCCC’s campus, located at 12345 College Blvd. in Overland Park, Kansas. The timing commemorates the Allied powers’ World War I ceasefire agreement with Germany, which took effect at 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918. November 11 was known as Armistice Day until President Eisenhower officially changed the name to Veterans Day in 1954.

This event is free and open to the public.
