OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County Community College’s Model United Nations team received an award at the 2020 American Model United Nations Conference, which convened online in late October.

Team member Izabella Fletcher earned the JCCC Model UN team an Exceptional Representation Award; she was a delegate representing Belgium on the General Assembly Second Committee.

Fletcher presented on the following topics: agricultural development, food security and nutrition, and promotion of sustainable tourism including ecotourism for poverty eradication and environmental protections. Her preparation for the conference involved researching Belgium’s past and current policies, writing a focused position paper and developing a resolution plan.

Model United Nations is an extracurricular activity in which students can learn about diplomacy, international relations and how the United Nations works. It strengthens participants’ speaking, debating and writing skills, and builds critical thinking, teamwork and leadership abilities.

The JCCC Model UN has a successful track record in competing with major universities and colleges. The team has won multiple awards over the last 10 years. More information is at the Model United Nations blog.
