OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Dollar General Literacy Foundation recently awarded Johnson County Community College (JCCC) a $7,000 grant to support adult literacy. The grant will be used to develop digital literacy curricula for adults learning basic skills (reading, writing and math) and preparing to take a high school equivalency examination.  This local grant award is part of more than $8.3 million in grants awarded this spring to approximately 1,000 nonprofit organizations, libraries and schools across the 44 states that Dollar General serves.

“The Dollar General Foundation has been an important and faithful partner in supporting adult and family literacy in our community,” noted Kate Allen, Associate Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Government Affairs at Johnson County Community College.

“In keeping with Dollar General’s mission of serving others, we are excited to provide grants to support literacy and education initiatives in the communities we proudly call home,” said Todd Vasos, Dollar General’s CEO and Dollar General Literacy Foundation board member.  “Each year, funds provided by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation make a real difference by providing the tools that students, adults and families need to pursue new opportunities and accomplish their goals. We believe these programs empower the communities we serve, and we are honored to play a role in their success.”

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation is proud to support initiatives that help others improve their lives through literacy and education. Since its inception in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $168 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping more than 10 million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education.

About Johnson County Adult Education

Johnson County Adult Education (JCAE) serves approximately 1,400 students annually: 600 Adult Basic Education/GED students and 800 English language learners. ABE/GED students work on individualized study plans and in small groups and/or online to focus on the specific content and skills needed to accomplish their goals. About 150 volunteers donate over 10,000 hours per year to tutoring students in adult education classrooms. English language learners are assessed and placed in one of four levels of classes based on their reading and listening proficiency. They then study a curriculum that emphasizes life and workplace skills as well as English language proficiency and workforce readiness. An English Connection class helps non-native speakers solidify their English language skills for success in credit classes taught in English. In addition, JCAE operates several related programs, including classes for underprepared college students, combination GED and career credential programs, and coaching on setting and attaining academic and professional goals.  JCAE is sponsored by Johnson County Community College with support from the Johnson County Library.
