Student staff assist Cavaliers, gain real-world experience
Whether it’s the friendly faces at the Student Engagement Desk or the talented team at Dining Services, JCCC relies on the expert work of student employees to keep the College running smoothly.
Our student employees can be found all across campus — assisting other students, building community connections, and gaining valuable career experience.
Student employees welcome fellow Cavaliers to JCCC
Starting college can feel overwhelming, but JCCC has a team of Admissions Ambassadors ready to help you make the transition. Student Ambassadors provide campus tours to prospective students, sharing their tips for maximizing the Cavalier experience.
Natalie Medina, a Neurodiagnostic Technology student and Team Lead Ambassador, loves connecting with new students. She’s worked on the admissions team for over two years.
“My favorite part of my job is creating that sense of comfort as students transition into their college journey,” she said. “It’s very fulfilling to see students you helped in the beginning being so confident around campus!”
Natalie will continue connecting with others in her career. She plans on working at Children’s Mercy as a neurophysiology technician.
Student employees help you succeed
JCCC enrolls over 1,000 immigrant and international students each semester. To help international Cavaliers find their footing, the International & Immigrant Students (IISS) office provides guidance regarding employment eligibility, authorization, financial assistance, and language learning options.
IISS employees Aya Hussein, a Web Development and Digital Media student, and Bianca Melchor-Gudiel, a Practical Nursing (LPN) student, both strongly related to the IISS mission of supporting students who are navigating a new country and language.
“Because of my own international background, I enjoy getting to interact with students and helping them find resources on campus,” said Aya.
“One of the most rewarding aspects of this job is seeing individuals leave feeling more confident and at ease after our office has been able to address their questions and concerns,” said Bianca. “As a Spanish speaker, I especially value the opportunity to help bridge communication gaps by providing translation support.”
Both Aya and Bianca learned about the IISS openings at job fairs JCCC holds every semester, one of many ways Cavaliers can find on-campus employment.
If you’re feeling “out of your element” in a science or health class, you can receive free tutoring at the Science Resource Center (SRC). There, you can meet Tutors like Sophia Clough, a General Sciences student with a focus in Biology. Sophia tutors for BIOL 205 General Genetics.
“I love working with brilliant minds who are passionate about making our world a better place,” she said.
Working in the SRC has been career-affirming for Sophia, who plans apply to graduate school to further pursue her studies in cell and molecular biology.

Eager to start building your resume? JCCC provides valuable internship opportunities right on campus!
Leidy Murillo, a Marketing Management student, landed an internship with the Center for Sustainability’s Zero Waste team, managing recycling, composting, and campus event operations.
“I love my job in general,” said Leidy. “The idea of going through different stuff coming from across campus, keeping track of numerous materials, and maintaining a zero-waste mindset has given me a lot to appreciate.”
Hosting events, rehoming materials, and tracking sustainability studies was just the match for an ambitious Cavalier like Leidy, who is ready to hit the ground running after graduation.
“My goal is to start my own business, while also finding a job that will give me valuable experience in my career path,” she said. “I also hope to travel to new places and keep studying, learning, and building my professional future."
Creative and business-savvy students apply what they learn in the classroom to professional projects at the JCCC Student Agency. Here, students work with clients in new, seasoned, small, and large companies throughout Johnson County and the Kansas City metro area.
Sam Poland, a Game Development student, has appreciated the opportunity to meet with clients and compile his professional portfolio.
“It's been extremely valuable in building my communication skills and learning to manage project timelines,” Sam said.
Those skills bode well for Sam, who plans to open a small, independent studio to develop games full-time and collaborate with people from the industry.
