Vanessa Kimani joins other JCCC alumni in pre-med path.

From a young age, Vanessa Kimani knew higher education was in her future. She watched two of her aunts earn their doctorates and says it inspired her to ask, “Why not me, too?”

Today, she’s well on her way to adding “doctor” to her name. After finishing her Associate of Science in General Sciences at JCCC, she plans to transfer to the University of Kansas to complete her bachelor’s degree and go on to medical school.

“My bachelor's degree will be in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies,” she said. “I chose this area of study because I have a passion for women's health and advocacy. I want to be in a position to make a positive change for women of color at their most vulnerable moments.”

JCCC gives you opportunities for growth and achievement

Vanessa’s dad was a JCCC alum, so she was already familiar with the campus when she decided to enroll. Originally from Iowa, Vanessa appreciated the opportunity to chart her own path.

“This school is perfect for me,” she said. “I wanted a fresh start and to create my own story here in Kansas City.”

Since becoming a Cavalier, Vanessa has hit the ground running. She has already presented twice in the Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CURE) Symposium, where she tested water samples on campus.

She encourages other Cavaliers to follow her lead and get involved.

“JCCC has so many resources, all you have to do is say yes and show up,” she said.

She also received two scholarships that allowed her to continue to self-fund her education.

Healthcare leaders start at JCCC

Next fall, Vanessa will say farewell to JCCC and begin her pre-med studies as she prepares to become a physician.

“My ultimate goal is to open my own practice,” she said. “My motivation has been and will continue to be my family and my legacy.”

Vanessa is following a path many Cavaliers have taken before — saving money and boosting their resume by starting their pre-med journey at JCCC.

Many JCCC alums have completed their associate degree, transferred to a four-year school, completed medical school, and gone on to work as physicians. JCCC alumni can be found at the University of Kansas Medical Center, the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Northwest Memorial Center, the University of Chicago, and KerixHealth, just to name a few. Now, Vanessa will be joining their ranks in just a few years.

She is excited about continuing to learn, and says incoming Cavaliers should embrace the opportunity.

“College is all about self-discovery and investing in yourself,” she said. “It’s the best form of self-care.”
