After returning to JCCC on his own terms, Aidan Kopp is using Electronics Technology as a pathway to an engineering degree.
For many high school graduates, heading straight to college feels like a logical next step. But when Aidan Kopp first enrolled at JCCC after graduating from Shawnee Mission South High School, his heart simply wasn’t in it.
“At the time, I was only taking classes because I felt pressured by my family and peers," he said. "I performed poorly, didn’t spend time studying, skipped classes, and overall, felt like I wasn’t in control of my own life."
Realizing he needed a change, he left JCCC to work full time at Batteries Plus Bulbs. What started as a job quickly sparked a genuine interest in electronics.
Now an Analysis and Repair Technician at Garmin, he’s returned to JCCC with newfound purpose and a clear vision for his future.
A Second Chance at Higher Education
After an eight-year college hiatus, Aidan is pursuing an Associate of Applied Science degree in Electronics Technology as a working professional. Heading back to the classroom as a nontraditional student can be daunting, but Aidan has thrived, maintaining an impressive 4.0 GPA.
He appreciates JCCC’s flexible scheduling — including day, evening, online, in-person, and hybrid classes — allowing students to balance school and employment. With an average class size of just 17 students, JCCC offers the personalized attention to help adult learners like Aidan succeed.
Support Through JCCC Scholarships
Aidan’s dedication recently earned him the Hugh L. and Betty E. Libby Scholarship, a financial boost that is changing the trajectory of his academic career.
"Without their generous donation, I’d have to extend my college career by a number of years, as I wouldn't be able to take as many credits per semester," he said.
Thanks to this scholarship, Aidan is transitioning to full-time student status this fall. By reducing his hours at Garmin, he can earn his associate degree sooner.
After graduation, Aidan plans to transfer to Oregon State University, a school that partners with Garmin’s branch in Salem, Oregon. There, he’ll pursue a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
“I like being hands-on with the work I do, and engineering, with a focus on electronics, seems to be the perfect mix of theory, design, and practical application,” he said.
Find Your Future at JCCC
When asked what advice he’d give incoming students, he shared a philosophy that shifted his mindset.
"Success is not the absence of failure, but the minimization of failure," Aidan said. "I’ve found more strength and willpower in allowing myself to not perform every task perfectly, but instead do the best I can at that time."
By focusing on the bigger picture rather than stressing over minor setbacks, Aidan reclaimed control of his education and his future.
