What will I learn in New Student Orientation?

Orientation is a great way to meet other students and learn important information. It’s required for all first-time college students, and is offered in person, live via Zoom and through online videos.

Orientation Will Explain:

Live Virtual Orientations

Live virtual orientations are offered through Zoom. Attending this presentation gives you the opportunity to engage with other students in a virtual format.

Registration is required. You will need your JCCC username and password to register for an orientation on the calendar below. A reminder email with the Zoom link will be sent to your stumail account one hour before your orientation.

Online Orientations

Online orientations are available if you can't attend a live virtual or on-campus orientation session. Watch the orientation videos and complete the required Pathways Survey. In about one business day after you watch the videos, your Personal Admission Plan will show that you completed an orientation. Please note, online orientation completions will not be processed on days that JCCC is closed.

Don’t have a computer at home? Both the online and live virtual versions of our New Student Orientation can be completed on a smartphone. You may also use a computer at JCCC. Computers are located in the Student Success Center on the 2nd floor of the Student Center. If you choose to attend a virtual orientation, be sure to download the Zoom app before you begin.

If you do not have access to your stumail account or need help accessing Zoom, contact the Technical Support Center at 913-469-8500, ext. 4357.

New Student Orientation (NSO) Q&A

If you have New Student Orientation listed as an incomplete item on your Personal Admission Plan in your MyJCCC account, you’ll need to complete orientation. Your personal admission plan will disappear when all items have been completed. If you are unsure, visit the Student Development Specialists in person (SC, 2nd floor) or call 913-469-3803.

If New Student Orientation is not on your Personal Admission Plan, it isn’t required, but you may find it helpful and you’re welcome to attend.

No; you need a student ID number and your MyJCCC login information to attend New Student Orientation. Apply for admission to JCCC.

Orientation takes about 90 minutes to complete.

On-Campus orientation: You may be able to bring a guest, but it’s not guaranteed. Room capacity is capped at 20 attendees. Priority is given to students registered for the event, including walk-in registrants. Guests may be asked to wait outside the room through the duration of the event.

Virtual Zoom orientation: Students are required to be present throughout the duration of the presentation. Guests may watch the Zoom presentation with the student using the same computer.

Go to the New Student Orientation webpage to register for a live Virtual (Zoom) or live On-Campus orientation. You’ll also find instructions on how to view the Online New Student Orientation Videos (no registration required).

After you register, check your stumail for the confirmation email from libapps@jccc.edu. If you don’t see it in your inbox, check your junk or spam folder. If you still don’t see it, use your stumail to email success@jccc.edu to request confirmation.

Orientation is offered several times a week at various times, and in several formats (live On-Campus, live Virtual and online videos). Since session times occasionally change, refer to the orientation webpage  for an up-to-date listing of sessions and to register.

Registration for live Virtual (Zoom) or live On-Campus New Student Orientation opens one week before a particular orientation session is scheduled to begin.

Walk-ins are welcome for on-campus New Student Orientation up until the session is scheduled to begin, space permitting. If you arrive at orientation more than 10 minutes late, we ask that you register for a different orientation session.

  • On-Campus AND Virtual NSO: generally within 1 hour of the end of the orientation.
  • Online Videos: within 1-2 business days (not including weekends or holidays when campus is closed).

Come prepared with your JCCC student ID number, JCCC username and password, and a photo ID. Although it’s not required, you may also bring an internet-capable device to log into your MyJCCC (phone or laptop). You are welcome to bring a personal laptop and can connect to the JCCC Wi-Fi.

You can find your JCCC ID number in one of the following ways:

  • Check your personal email account for your acceptance email (this email can sometimes be found in your junk folder).
  • Call the Technical Support Center at 913-469-8500, ext. 4357.
  • Bring your photo ID to a Student Development Specialist on the 2nd floor of the Student Center.

Time and location details are included in the confirmation email you receive in your stumail account immediately after registering for a live Virtual or live On-Campus New Student Orientation. If you can’t locate it, email success@jccc.edu to request details.

For Virtual New Student Orientation, your Zoom link is included in a reminder email that is sent to your stumail one hour before orientation is scheduled to begin. If the orientation is an hour away and you can’t locate it, email success@jccc.edu.

You’ll find the link to cancel a registration in the confirmation email (sent immediately after you registered) as well as the reminder email (sent one hour before your orientation is scheduled to begin).

Register for a new session and cancel your previous registration.

NSO is not offered in any other language at this time. If you are concerned about comprehending all information in a setting where English is spoken at a conversational pace, we recommend you choose the online orientation videos, since you can watch the videos at your own pace, pause and re-watch.

To arrange for sign language interpretation or any accommodation, contact Access Services at least 48 hours before your scheduled orientation.

No. All orientation options are free.

There are computers available for your use in the Student Success Center. For assistance, contact a Student Development Specialist at the front desks in the Student Center, 2nd floor.

No, but you’ll learn how to become ready to enroll in classes. Topics covered in New Student Orientation include: how to become fully admitted to JCCC (Personal Admission Plan), how to be ready for enrollment (placement testing, counseling), campus safety, support services and campus involvement. If the orientation ends before these departments close, you can visit with JCCC counselors to choose classes, and the Student Development Specialists can provide instruction for how to navigate the enrollment portal.
