Instructors have provided the following information to generally describe what to expect in their classes.

Math

Class Format

Self-paced sections: Students are allowed to take up to 9 months to complete the course with an independent study-type model.

Face-to-face sections: My classes are usually designed as a traditional lecture with guided notes and lots of examples. I encourage student questions and participation in class discussions. Students often will work in groups to solve problem sets in class.

Online sections: Students will purchase an online software package that provides resources such as videos, PowerPoints and notes as well as online homework and quizzes. Students may be required to participate in online discussions. Online students must have access to a computer with a reliable internet connection and be able to work independently.

Resource Use

Textbooks: A textbook, either digital or physical, is recommended, if not required, for all classes.

Calculator: In Math 171 and above, a math department approved graphing calculator is required. Calculators are not allowed for portions of Math 111 and only a basic 4-function calculator when allowed. All other classes will require a scientific calculator.

Computer Software: Students are expected to regularly check Canvas for announcements and class materials. The gradebook on Canvas will be updated regularly so that students can keep track of their progress in the class. An online homework system (MyMathLab, Enhanced WebAssign, etc.) will be used in all my classes regardless of the class format.

Assessment

All courses will have 3-6 unit exams and a comprehensive final exam. Testing for self-paced and online sections must be done in a proctored environment through Testing Services unless other arrangements are made with the professor. Some classes will also have periodic quizzes to assess the students’ understanding of the current section. Homework and quizzes are assigned online, and additional activities/projects may be assigned.

Homework Policy

For all class formats, online homework will be assigned for every section that is covered in class. Please check the course syllabus for specific homework policies.

Attendance Policy

Attendance is crucial to learning and understanding mathematics. I adhere to the JCCC attendance policies for face-to-face classes and will withdraw students for not attending. Please check the course syllabus for specific attendance policies. There is no attendance required for self-paced classes.

Availability

My schedule can vary widely throughout the semester. While I am often available, appointments are strongly recommended because some of my faculty responsibilities require me to be off-campus. I can be easily reached via email and I try to reply to all student emails within 24 hours during the week.

Additional Information

Students can enroll in a self-paced course at any time in the semester. Please contact me for more information if you are interested in taking a self-paced math class.
