Instructors have provided the following information to generally describe what to expect in their classes.

Math

Class Format

All classes are taught as face-to-face sections using lecture, interactive question/answer format and working at the whiteboards on occasion. A typical class will begin with homework questions or a warm-up question from previous material.

Resource Use

Textbooks are optional for all courses for which online homework is used. Online homework is used in corequisite sections, Math 051, 061, and 071. Though textbooks are optional, textbook readings are assigned each day of class. If you prefer to read a hard copy textbook versus an ebook, you will need to purchase a hard copy in addition to the online course materials.

Calculators are used to supplement learning. A graphing calculator is required in Math 071/171 and may be rented from the MRC. Cell phone calculators are not permitted.

Online Homework is used extensively in corequisite sections. All paper/pencil work needs to be organized and submitted for credit.

Assessment

Typically, a student’s grade will be composed of scores on homework, quizzes, exams, and the final exam. In corequisite sections, there will be several projects to demonstrate understanding of course objectives. Students will also earn points for active attendance: being punctual and prepared, being engaged and participating in classroom discussion, and being distraction and cell phone free.

Homework Policy

Daily homework will be assigned in each course and count toward the semester grade. Help in the Math Resource Center is strongly encouraged if students struggle while completing homework.

Attendance Policy

Students should expect that any missed class time will result in an incomplete understanding of the course material and expectations. This, in turn, may adversely affect grades. To be fair to all students, no quizzes or tests may be taken after the scheduled date due to absence. However, the final exam score may be used as a replacement for the lowest exam score if it is higher.
