Work in one of the 20 fastest-growing occupations in the United States. Use your health information knowledge and skills to securely manage health records, improve system workflow and provide technical support to improve patient care.

What Will I Learn in JCCC's Health Information Systems Program?

If you are highly motivated and a proficient problem-solver, understand the importance of exceptional customer service and skilled technical support, and have a passion to help people, then you have the qualities to excel as a health information systems professional.

Choose from two tracks:

  • Health Information Systems Specialist Certificate — Provide user support of health information systems and design and deliver training programs to employees in clinical and public health settings. This certificate will also provide participants with the knowledge and skills to assist healthcare providers to design workflow and use EHRs to meet government standards of quality reporting and improvement initiatives.

  • Associate of Arts or Associate of Science plus Health Information System Specialist Certificate (earn both at the same time by taking the HCIS certificate courses as degree electives) — Earn your associate degree and transfer to a four-year program at one of JCCC’s transfer partner schools. Or move directly into the workforce to support the health information systems industry usage of electronic health records (EHR) and other technologies to advance the quality, efficiency and security of patient records for improved care.

Your studies will include training in simulated environments developed by Cerner, the nation’s leader in health information and electronic health records (EHR) technology. Cerner’s products are in use at more than 27,000 facilities around the world. You will learn to:

  • Create, catalog and secure health information
  • Work in Excel and Microsoft Access
  • Monitor electronic health record (EHR) functionality and usability
  • Use correct medical terminology
  • Build your résumé with an internship that will give you real-world experience

You’ll learn why it’s important to understand national policy reform, including:

  • The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
  • Government incentive programs
  • Information exchanges
  • Consumer engagement
  • Security regulations
