Enroll in this fully online program and develop the knowledge and technical skillset to securely manage health records, improve system workflow, and provide technical support to improve patient care.  

Developed by Oracle Cerner, the nation’s leader in health information and EHR technology, the training environments are used at more than 27,500 facilities around the world. You'll learn to: 

  • Monitor electronic health record (EHR) functionality and usability
  • Create, analyze, and secure health information and health data
  • Configure, implement and maintain health information technologies
  • Deliver training to adult learners
  • Analyze and redesign healthcare workflows
  • Use correct medical terminology
You will also learn why it’s important to understand national policy and other key topics, including: 
  • HIPAA 
  • Information exchanges
  • Consumer engagement
  • Security regulations
  • Healthcare data analytics
  • Population health
  • Quality improvement
  • Government incentive programs

Choose from two tracks: a one-year certificate or a 2-year transfer Associate of Arts (AA) or Associate of Science (AS) degree.

  • Health Information Systems Specialist Certificate — Provide user support of health information systems and design and deliver training programs to employees in clinical and public health settings. Develop the knowledge and skills to assist healthcare providers to design workflows and use electronic health records (EHR) to meet government standards of quality reporting and improvement initiatives.
  • Associate of Arts or Associate of Science + Health Information Systems Specialist Certificate Earn both at the same time by taking the HCIS certificate courses as degree electives — Choose between the AA or AS degree while also earning the Health Information Systems Specialist Certificate. Then transfer to a four-year program at one of JCCC’s transfer partner schools or move directly into the workforce to support the health information systems industry usage of EHRs and other technologies which advance the quality, efficiency and security of patient records for improved care.

Credits can transfer to the University of Kansas’ Healthcare Information Management program, Ottawa University’s clinical and non-clinical bachelor’s degree programs in Health Care Management, or Washburn University's Online Bachelor of Health Science in Health Services Administration program.
