Explore and study natural and synthetic sculptural forms as you create art using traditional or contemporary media and techniques in JCCC’s Sculpture courses.

What Will I Learn About Sculpture at JCCC?

Work with limestone, clay, wax, bronze, aluminum and steel as you hone your skills in carving, modeling and building. There are few boundaries, so your work can be purely creative. Mixed-media sculpture allows for more inventiveness and artistic exploration.

You’ll be encouraged to communicate your emotions and ideas with the knowledge you gain, strengthen your interpretative skills, and establish an appreciation for your sculpting work and that of others.

You’ll explore two- and three-dimensional design, figure modeling and drawing, digital tools, video art, casting, structures, creating public art and installations, and interactive media.

Develop your sculpting abilities using the College’s industrial-quality tools and equipment as you:

  • Use wax and bronze casting approaches
  • Explore the substitution process to cast bronze or aluminum
  • Learn carving and modeling methods to produce sandstone, limestone and plaster sculptures
  • Build collage and welded steel forms
  • Understand the hazards, safety measures and disposal protocols associated with specific materials

A range of careers — from artist to designer — is available to JCCC Sculpture students. Sculpting is a fine art that opens numerous career opportunities.

About 60 percent of sculptors are self-employed. Sculptors are sometimes commissioned and paid to make pieces for a specific group or corporation. Income is mostly made by showing pieces in gallery shows and selling pieces independently or through art dealers.
