What Will I Learn About Painting at JCCC?

At Johnson County Community College, Painting courses are designed to encourage you to see the world differently — to bring beauty and meaning to your art.

We believe feedback is a gift! Our award-winning Fine Arts faculty and your peers will critique your painting pieces with objective, art-based evaluations. Together, you’ll tackle advanced questions with an emphasis on individual expression based on historical and contemporary ideas and approaches in painting art.

In JCCC’s Painting courses, you’ll stay informed about the current state of the industry and what it is like to work in the field.

Gain experience with painting as you produce a series of out-of-class projects that will demonstrate your personal expression while applying:

  • Surface preparation
  • Shape and space
  • Texture
  • Composition and design
  • Color relationships and mixing

Earn an Associate of Fine Arts (AFA) Degree

JCCC offers an Associate of Fine Arts degree that lets you tailor your learning experience to match your interests.

  • AFA with the Fine Arts Track - This track is a general degree focusing on Fine Arts.
  • AFA with the Lens-based Media Track - This track offers you the flexibility to focus on Photography or Flimmaking.

Why JCCC for Painting Courses?

You’ll learn about and practice your techniques in painting in interactive classrooms and labs housed in our new 37,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art Fine Arts & Design Studios (FADS).

As a Fine Arts student, you’ll have access to:

JCCC Painting and Fine Arts professors are engaged in local, regional and international venues, exhibitions, and activities. Many instructors attend emerging trends conferences and workshops. Involvement is critical to stay current on new techniques, practices and methods for painting and other art forms.

The JCCC campus is home to the internationally recognized Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art. The Nerman Museum houses a world-class collection of permanent pieces of art and traveling exhibitions, including artwork of all methods and forms, countries, cultures, and eras. The museum serves as a vital resource for students and the community learning about art, culture, and history.

As you create work in your painting courses, you may also exhibit your work through these outlets:

  • The Student Gallery, located on third floor of the Student Center, showcases some of the best work by JCCC student artists.
  • Mind’s Eye is a literary magazine produced yearly and features students’ artistic works.
  • Art competitions and exhibitions at local, regional and national levels, such as those sponsored by League for Innovation in the Community College, put your work in front of industry professionals and give it a wider community audience.

Most fine arts painters pursue postsecondary education to earn degrees that can improve their skills and job prospects. The cost of going to school can be daunting. Fortunately, our Financial Aid office is here to help you through the process. Our counselors can help you find ways to fund your schooling, including scholarships and student loans, both of which can help to reduce the cost of your tuition every semester.
