Instructors have provided the following information to generally describe what to expect in their classes.

Economics

Class Format

Online Courses:

Online courses will use a mandatory textbook and homework assignments from the publisher.  The class will be complemented with supplemental current event readings and low-stake discussion posts where students apply economics to their everyday lives. Students will have access to practice problems, practice quizzes, chapter summaries, applicable videos, and worksheets.  Students are expected to login in weekly and complete your assignments on time.

Traditional Face-to-Face On Campus Courses:

In-person classes follow a procedure of (i) lecture, (ii) in-class exercises (iii) homework assignments with quizzes and exams evenly spaced out.

Resource Use

Book: Highly recommended where students have the option to buy a cheap early edition for pennies on the dollar.

Calculator: Optional, but recommended.

Software: No additional software is required.

Assessment

Online Courses:

A student’s grade is determined by participation in online discussion forums, completion of weekly homework assignments and examinations and quizzes. Students have the option of working 3 weeks ahead on chapter assignments.

Traditional Face-to-Face On Campus Courses:

A student’s grade is determined by homework assignments, canvas quizzes, in-class quizzes, and three examinations. Exams matter and will affect half your grade, but they are not high stakes exams.  The other half your your grade comes from homework assignments and quizzes.

Attendance Policy

Online Courses:

Online students are “required” to Login to the course website at least two times per week. However, the Economics Department’s policy is NOT to Drop a student for lack of attendance.

Traditional Face-to-Face On Campus Courses:

If you are missing classes, I will reach out and have a discussion with you regarding what is going on simply because I care.  I reserve the right to penalize for non-attendance, but usually the student penalizes themselves.  I award up to 1.5% points of extra credit for good attendance and participation.

Instructor Availability

I hold regular office hours each week. I have and will make myself available to students out of my office hours if there is a conflict.  I can always be reached via email at mmill313@jccc.edu

Additional Information

I love challenging my students and using economics to enhance critical thinking and higher order thinking skills. I love seeing my students gain greater confidence in their academic abilities.  While I hold high standards, I want my students to succeed.  I am in your corner and students who put in the effort often yield good results.
